Need Quick Advice!

Hey guys, haven't been on a lot lately, been hitting the books a lot. I finally turned 18, I have still been putting in a large amount of hours into reading and watching poker learning as much as possible. I played a Cash Game in Edmonton 2 nights ago on my 18th before I went out, I ended up being up 60$ in 30minutes or so. So today I am going to do a tournament at Yellow Head, its a $100+$10+*$5 with 9,000+*1,000 chips.
Is there anything I should really know any last minute advice that I should know about going into a live tournament that will help me get far. I am thinking of going into it somewhat tight-aggresive. Definitely want to make the money, but I know I will need to play my proper hands and not hold back.

Any advice would be great! Thanks!

Ryan

  • Good luck, just relax, play your game and don't fall into the trap of assuming everyones bluffing you. Do NOT let yourself get too short before getting pushy... Try not to act like fed... (epic dunk) :)

Thanks, yea I will stay relaxed and not give much emotion etc. I will just play the best I can, won't be afraid to make a move if I think someone is bluffing me.
And haha I was just reading Epic Donk's "I Quit" thread, if I ever turn out like that make sure to fly down here and beat my ass with a 9 iron. Im a pretty straight up cheerful guy though so im sure ill get along with the majority of you, though im probably the youngest PokerForum user :P

I am kind of nervous for tonight though, my grandparents are coming to watch me on the rail!
  • Did you check to see if T8 was playing there?

T8urmoney? Nope, I don't really know many members here or talked to many yet. Does he play a lot at Yellowhead?
  • Looks like a deep stack (not knowing the blinds). Have patience and don't stack off too light.

My buddy who plays a lot (Plays a few tournaments a week at Yellow) says final table usually hits 11:30 - Midnight. Im going with him today.
  • depending on the players/blind raises, I find in MOST live tournies (not all) you can really push the table around late in the game. Last week i was in a tourny with 15 min blind raises. At one point I had a 4000 stack with 600-1200 blinds. My stack grew to 12000 ON PURE STEALS (a lot of limp-folds).... the table was very weak passive mind you.

Look for their weaknesses and exploit them. Don't let your stack get too short, but still have patience to wait for the good spots.
MOst of all, HAVE FUN! Thats what most of the players are there for anyway.

This is very basic yet I still have problems with it > Don't bluff those who are allways going to call you, but value bet them to town even with your A high hand if you feel its best.

I made it till around 9:30ish. I didn't rebuy.. I was at table 2 my friend was at table 4. My friend warned me I was at a table with a bunch of regulars. A few older guys, a guy with a cowboy hat, and a talkative Lebanese guy. I was at a fairly aggressive table when blinds were 50 and 100 there were raises of 3,500 pre-flop at times.
I couldn't get much going. Guy to my right was on a run of a lifetime for a while tripled up early. I got AK a lot but couldn't get anything rolling my way. I was down to about 4,000 chips managed to pull off a hand which brought me a little over 12k. I was grinding a 8k stack for a hour. I was dealt trip Queens I had my opponent covered. River came 36Ko, I raise about 2,500 he calls. Turn is a Queen, im happy as hell I raise another 2,500 he calls. I push on the river, I show my trip Queens, he shows me trip Kings. Was at 2,800 after that. After a few folds I had K10s, I pushed had 2 callers, one with 77 and one with 10J. Nothing came my way, guy with the 7s won the hand knocking me and the guy across from me out.
  • Welcome to live MTT's......

As in all MTT's, you need a little 'run good' to TID, and even just to cash.

I was there last night as well, ran super hot early, super cold late.

In the first 10 hands.....flopped 3 sets, and one nut flush (lost this one, as the board paired).
Get down to 3 tables then this:

    AA<A8 AIPF
    A8<A4 AIPF
    A9<88 AIPF

Waiting for the good end of variance.

I disagree with Schabs.....the $100 tourney is much better value for the money. (20 min>15min, 10G>6G starting stacks for the smaller buy-ins).

This assuming you know what you're doing of course.
  • Overall I think I played fairly well, and patient. Just couldnt get the cards going my way. The only mistakes I made were not playing AK aggressive enough (as I had AK a few times). I was at a table with regs, and they were all fairly aggressive.

    That's not agressive. That's spewy ala epic_donk
  • hobbes, I could eat your chips all day at a table, dont talk like you are good.

I'm not doubting its value for the buyin, believe me I've played in them. As for someone just starting off playing live casino poker $100+$10 buyin tournaments might be a little steep. I might start off with something smaller like $60 buyin.

Ahh, misread what you were saying. Yeah, to cut your teeth, cheaper the better.
