Dilema

Whats up yall

First time poster, long time player. Im having a little dilemna which I need to resolve before the weekend and am hoping someone can help me. Im having a single elimination heads up tourney with a bounty. The bounty is on the guy who won it last year. I need a way to make it fair for seating at this game, everyone is gonna want a chance to play him and bust him. I would like the tourney to start as soon as there are atleast 4 people who show up as I have a cash game that will be ready to go. How can I devise a way to give everyone a fair chance and arrange seating for my event?
Thanks in advance.

  • You're trying to do 2 competing things here, and I think you have to choose.

There are 2 ways to be fair about the bounty player:

    1) Have everyone start at the same time, and fully randomize the pairings

    or

    2) Get a commitment from all of the players, and draw up the schedule beforehand.

I would suggest #1 since a) Getting a firm commitment from poker players is like pulling teeth, and b) no matter how fair you are in the pairings, someone will inevitably complain that it was rigged unless you do the randomization in front of them.

Also, unless you are sure that the tournament will be full it would be hard to start the tourney staggered since you will not know the number of players involved - and you should have all of the byes in the first round, not the later rounds.

(ie. if 23 players show up then you should have 9 players getting a bye, and 7 matches played, thus resulting in 16 players for the second round which makes for no more byes in the rest of the tourney).

I know this runs contrary to wanting to have players for a cash game right away - instead maybe you should have a cash game going when players get there, and run it until the tourney starts.
  • Thats a good idea to have the cash game runnining first. As for the tourney, it will be either 8 or 16 depending on how many show and if there are extra spots they can be bought, bypeople whom busted out. What is the best way to draw players to compete against each other?
