Stupid Rounders Question

Watching this for the god only knows how many time and I'm wondering something. When he first walks into KGB's place, KGB says "$500?" and Mike responds "Not today."

What game is he playing that he's buying in for $500? 1/2 with a high max? 2/5 with a low max?

I just can't see the character that is supposed to be Mike buying in for less than the max. Either way, how the fuck can he finance law school on low stakes games like that? Impressive to say the least.

oh you newbies of the NL age...
back in the day before the internets and tv coverage, the majority of games were limit. Joey Knish makes mention of a 10/20 limit game when he tries to stop mike from sitting down.
  • Good answer!!

    500?

    Not tonight.

    No, What?

Gimme three stacks of high society.
    // 3 racks of $100 chips

    30,000, count it.

    's good.

So, you're setting the apple, good, want a cookie?

Agreed that I'm a newbie. However, his whole monologue is based around NL to open the movie. Bad assumption that he plays NL at this club? Also, at the casino in AC, they were playing NL. Looked like 2/5 while checking out the stacks.

And yes I was really tired at 4am while watching this and kept seeing weird shit and coming up with oddball questions.
  • PokerKai nailed it, but how is $500 a low buy-in for $2/$5 NL? That's the max at my local casino (100 x BB). And most buy in for $200 - which I've never understood. If they played the "double or nothing" short-stack strategy, it would make sense, but then they play loose-aggressive with drawing hands...

OK you hooked me in for a reply.
    • If you notice, the "The game is no limit Texas hold'em..." part of the monologue doesn't start yet (is just about to).
    • On his was to KGBs in the elevator, he references winning 'one big bet an hour' (generally previously a limit theory)
    • when they play the cops, when they first go into the Chesterfield it is all 20/40 limit games they are playing
which leads me to believe he played Limit - "steady Eddie" Mike McDermott. It also leads me to believe that I watch that movie way too much.

...if only the local Niagara casinos would allow either of those options at the NL tables (currently $200 and $300... $300?? sigh)

This all makes much more sense now. Thanks.

Oh, and Caesar's Windsor has $1000 as the max for the 2/5. That was where I was getting confused. At least that was one of the areas...

    Glad to help:)

at the taj mahal game in AC, they were definitely playing limit holdem. my NL newbies comment wasnt meant to be offensive, it was really more a comment on how dominant NL is today that people dont even realize that it wasnt always this way.

also, limits have skyrocketed so quick that its hard to remember a time when limit 10/20 or 20/40 was considered a big game...a game big enough to support a young man trying to go to law school.

    .

Nobody has any white chips, It can't be 2/5 in the casino.

No offense taken at all Kai. I agree, it definitely was a NL skyrocket in the last 10 years (not that I was playing that long ago, just from what I've been told).

Reef, you're right, I'm nuts. Maybe it was 5/5?

No ceberebereus, u just dont know anything about the game.
  • Seriously fed, grow up. There's literally no point to your constant, pathetic attempts. Following me around to every thread I post is just sad. Just because you are unable to take anyone's advice on your game and feel you are the best without anything to back it up and nearly every person on here has you on block it doesn't mean you should chase one of the half dozen people who doesn't.

And why haven't I blocked you? Well, I guess I'm an eternal optimist. I believe that even the worst of people can change and grow. Hopefully that happens with you sooner rather than later.

Thanks to all those who chimed in with actual coherant thoughts and useful ideas.

ceberbius, I cant believe I just tilted you.

And if you havent noticed, this thread backfired on you huge, its my duty to bug you about it, as you would do the exact same to me.

Also, I havent been as big of a dbag lately... no more pro talk, no more BS.. I was on a massive heater coming in here which is why I was boasting about my big swinging poker dick.

ran colder, and now im trying to get input by making actually inquisitive strategy threads trying to sharpen my game, because believe it or not, SOME ppl here have my respect after watching.

I am a poker nut, and rail alot of ppl and wont say anything. You included.

    /thread derailment.

    rounders is a sick flick.

Wow fed, you really think you tilted me? How sad for you. That was nowhere near tilt as my desk is still in one piece.

As for the thread backfiring on me huge? Not really. I asked questions/commented about topics in the movie that I was curious about. I got information and a discussion, so really, that's a win.

Oh, and as said numerous times, not concerned about you "respecting" my game in the slightest. Keep trying cubby, maybe you'll tilt me one day. Doubtful, but we all need dreams.

Can you tell us more about the Windsor 2/5 game?

    How big does it play?
How much does the fish usually buy in for?

All I know is the max buy in and that they make a lot of noise as I'm not nearly close to being rolled enough for 2/5. Seems like there's a lot of tilty players though as they're constantly yapping at each other and someone walks away every 20-30 minute seriously pissed off. According to a couple of players I was at a table with last week, there used to be no max on it. Have yet to confirm this though.

    Wow!

That's really strange that they would piss each other off every 20-30 minutes!

    Is the game soft?

Do the players intentionally act obnoxious to tilt the other players?

    What's the rake/session fee like?

    What's the buyin/rake at 1/2NL there?

I think the pissing each other off thing is that they take it waaaaaaay too serious. I think the entire time I've played there, I've gotten pissed/tilted over one call ($35 for a fucking two outer and catches, what an asshole).

The 2/5 game does appear to be soft at times. Really depends on how many regs show up.

Pretty sure there's at least two that I see who are regs that can see who will tilt if they act like twits, so they do. And it works. :)

I think, and I will check next time I go, the rake is $10 max on the 2/5, but that is honestly a guess. There are no session fees at Windsor. They don't suck like that.

1/2 min/max buyin is $50/$200. Max rake is $5; pretty standard from the few places I've been, aside from Rama that made it $6. I still don't get that tbh as they always have the room packed. Supply and demand perhaps.

My opinion of the Windsor poker room is that it is a soft room, including the regulars. I am by no means a great player; I'd say I'm passibly good most days. Yet, when I walk in there, I feel like I'm walking into a berry patch. I've been 10 times since I moved here, have left up $300+ 8 of those 10 trips. As I said, I'm not that good, so it must be a soft room. I do have a couch for PFCers to crash on should they make the trip :)
