Poker Etiquette

Was at a friends on the weekend and we decided to play a couple of turbo sit n goes (poker bingo). First three went pretty good each time the two last players splitting the pot than starting another so people didn't have to wait to long (one split for me). Last game of the evening down to three players blinds are 600-1200 small stack goes all-in for his last 1250 small blind (me) calls the other 650 and big blind calls 50. I have Q9 and check blind flop comes big blind checks. Before turn I check blind again turn comes big blind bets 4000. I can't believe he bet as I wanted to knockout small stack and split pot and head home and tell Big Blind so. Anyway I take a look at the board and see K J 2 10 go all-in and big blind mucks. I take down pot and am heads up with a large chip advantage and buddy has the balls to ask for a split which I would have done if he checked down previous pot, but tell him to stick it because of prick move on previous hand.
This was a friend somebody brought over and he is not a novice player some thought I over reacted and others thought I was right just wondering what players here would of done and am I right or wrong?

  • Chopping as a rule is not the best....

final tabled at a tourney last night... and everyone was requesting chops or to see the numbers.. I refused and the game kept going, they were a little tilted with me.

I shoulda taken the chop as I ended up busting 4th, but thats the game.

Up or out as they like to say.

Poker is a game you play to win, not chop or split pots.

last game of the night, you did the right thing playing it out, imo.. regardless of the dick move on his behalf on the hand prior.
  • a: you shouldn't have told the bb you wanted to check it down, as it should be "implied" collusion, not outright collusion..lol...

b: Fuck him...IF he knew what he was doing the first time..no need to split.

regardless of what happened the hand before, never chop for even amounts when you have a substantial advantage.....

while I agree..this was a home game for 20 bucks and they wanted to go home..no harm, no foul.

I checked blind before the flop and turn never saying I wanted to check it down. I only made the statement after he made the bet on the turn not before. He just pissed me off because he knows better.
  • havent read the full thread since i saw fed had comments. So i skipped them.

Picked up this much though. friendly game. Someones friend was a dick in the pot b4.

Its a friendly game and its only for like $20.00

No need to make enemies over it. I'd chat him up so that he felt welcomed into the next game and look at it as money in the bank or an investment in that player if they win, aslong as you are there to pick up the chips when they snap and spill chips.

No need to get verbal with the player but i would do it in jest. Someone did this to me b4 in a fun game (summer time) , so when he came over on new years eve for a game, first thing i said to him was "did ya bring my f***** money with you?? All meant in good jest but it does set the mood, without totally being a dick all about the $$. IMO
  • I'd chop it in this case. You already chopped one so you set the precedent. Afterwards, explain to the friend the nuances of bubble play and why you got upset.

How you proceed going forward depends on his reaction.
  • If for the entire night their was no difference in payout for 1st and 2nd, then the guy who raised is an idiot. When he raised, I would just say you are an idiot.

Was he protecting his friend that was playing since you don't know this guy directly?

Then I would raise his ass. After the knockout, not much you can do. Would have to split the pot, that is what has been going on and rules are rules.
  • if its a game with friends then let it go, if he did on purpose then hes not a cool dude, but poker shouldn't be a big deal. generally id expect the winner to bring beer next time. if its more serious to you and them, then you would eventually find a new group if it kept happening. chop whatever buy the beer and get them to buy the pizza i say...

There was a differnce in payouts for 1st and 2nd of $60 but it was more for fun so when it got down to two players usually just split to get the next game going. However I felt he made the play to have a big chip lead and try to take first place money that is why I did not split and played to the end. We talked after over a beer and everythig is cool told him next time he comes, play the game in the manner it is intended (fun) and he would have walked away with a little extra cash also.
