Pocket Pair UTG

In low limit hold'em how do you play PP utg.

Essentially where do you make the change between, fold / call / raise.

I've been trying to figure out how to approach medium pockets 77-TT? I find in limit it is hard (but not impossible) for any of these hands to hold up as the best hand, without a set. If i bet out with any of these hands though, and flop a set i've greatly reduced my payoff.

I know some people advocate folding the smallest pocket pairs UTG so can people answer by putting a typcial action next to each.

22 - call / raise / fold
33 - call / raise / fold
44 - call / raise / fold
55 - call / raise / fold
66 - call / raise / fold
77 - call / raise / fold
88 - call / raise / fold
99 - call / raise / fold
TT - call / raise / fold
JJ - call / raise / fold
QQ - call / raise / fold
KK - call / raise / fold
AA - call / raise / fold

  • If the game is LP, I would usually call with 22-88, raise with JJ-AA, and "it depends" (call or raise) with 99-TT.

If there's quite a bit more pre-flop raising than usual or if the game is way more solid than usual post-flop, I might drop the smalest pairs, say 22-55. To be honest, it's pretty rare that I find myself in a game where I'm folding 22.

If the game is out of control pre-flop, I'd fold 22-88, raise with JJ-AA, and again 99-TT are in between (although this time raise or fold, no calling).

Whether I'm UTG or not doesn't concern me too much in typical low-limit. I don't consider position to be all that important for my PP starting standards.

  • I agree with Scotty's take on these hands, in the context of LLHE. However, at the same time, I'm thinking back to a particular 15/30 game where I raised UTG with 22. I'm trying to remember who won that hand... oh yes, that's right, it was ScottyZ. I didn't go past the flop, though. ;)
