Tipping dealers - Tournament play

Dave,

Is there a reccommended tip amount or percentage of winnings from a tournament that is given to the dealers? Or is it each to his own? I never know if i am being generous or being cheap. Or is it not common practice everywhere to tip the dealers?

  • I dont think you tip dealers because the chips aren't worth there actual value. You make the final table, so you have like a 78K TC stack, oh here you go George, *tosses him a 1000 chip..."
  • I would say 2-4% is plenty but thats me. I would lean towards the middle ground here, of course it totally depends on your experience at the Casino and with the dealers. If you feel they deserve only 2%, give it to em'. I don't think I would ever leave a tournament without tipping the dealers, how much is the only question.

  • I have seen 3 percent stated as standard and I tend to adhere to that.

wait until you read my trip report about some of the tips that I have handed out in the Dominican Republic. Wowza. You think $100 goes a long way in Vegas? It practically stops the world down here.

Must reign in the Cuba Libras and stop handing out Benjamins to the hotel staff.
  • I've wondered about this myself. A lot of my tournament winnings have happened online, so when I won the 10K in Regina I asked another guy who had just busted out and was waiting to be paid if he was tipping them. He was older, and just seemed more experienced than me at live tournament protocol.

He said 'no, no... don't tip them. They've already taken a huge percentage out of the prize pool for the dealers--they're well looked-after already'. So, I took his advice.

But now I think I should have given them something anyways, after playing some more live tournaments. I think it all comes down to how much of the prize pool is already going to the dealers, how much you won, and how generous you happen to be. My reason for not tipping in Regina had nothing to do with generosity or lack of it--it was just that I was inexperienced, and I was following advice that, for all I know, may have been correct.

As for 'private' tournaments, I'd probably tip around 5% of my winnings, but last time I made money in one I was so pumped up about winning that the thought didn't even cross my mind, and I left with an envelope full of cash. I felt bad about it the next day, though.

So yeah. I really have nothing to contribute. Dave, do you tip in Regina as well?

    lookin' fwd to it :)
  • Yes I tip in Regina.

As far as I know there is nothing taken from the prize pool for the dealers. The person who told all_aces that was missinformed (I think).
  • Damn. Oh well.... I'll tip 'em double next time!
  • How would you go about tipping tournament dealers? Isn't there a whole bunch of them? What if one of them was a lousy dealer? So many questions, so little money...
  • Tournament dealer tips are pooled. You could , in LV, tip individual dealers if you wanted, but you would have to find them.

Ummm, Graham? Uh well, this is a bit uncomfortable but um, uh, I think I over-tipped you... :frown: Oh what the hell. When I'm happy, everyone is happy!
