Help Clarify This Rule!

Ok, so everyone know the show one, show all rule where you have to show everyone your cards if you show someone at the table. Everyone also knows the rule where you have to show both cards at showdown even if you can win with one card...

Now here is the question that I believe I have the answer to but I have to get this clarified... If everyone mucks their cards and the winner decides to show one card to the group just for fun, does the winner also have to show their second card?

I've seen that one a few times, but since you have already won the hand (by everyone else mucking), the rule doesn't really apply. IMO anyways...

Yea, I would tend to agree with this. I know on the Merge network online they have an option to show just one card, and there is no button for the other players to force you to show the others.
  • Yeah, you already won the pot. Chips are sliding to you and you still have your cards. At that point, you can do whatever you want with them. You see it on TV all the time, player asks the guy, "I'll let you flip over a card, which one you want?"
  • I know you were asking about showdown, but let's say on the turn you bet, opponents muck, action is dead. You are the only remaining player with cards and are the winner. If you decide to get cute and show 1, it doesn't affect the pot being pushed.

However @ showdown there are a lot of variables, particularly when playing live and for cash. Did another player request to see, did everyone muck & then you showed 1 to be cute, etc.

Technically you need to show 2 to win @ showdown, but it's partially a formality/etiquette and to prevent angling. (showing top pair and lying about your kicker to induce a fold for example)

Anyone complaining live about a player showing 1 and winning is just arguing so they can see the hand, as they were likely the last player standing. Simply request to see the hand in that instance.

Basically it's semantics, as you can argue that if the other players have killed their hands, the pot is your by default anyway and you don't have to show.

A smart player would muck 1 card and show the other.
