Lost my whole bankroll

Ok, so it's not as bad as it sounds, it was on $70 but feel like I lost a million.

For the record I know this doesn't make me special and many have gone through this and worse so I am not looking for ANY sympathy at all.

That being said, how do you know if you are a bad poker player or just not studied enough etc...?

I have excluded myself from cash games for 2 week where I will then start over again but the fact that I have lost every cent I have put into poker is really weighing on me.

Any opinion, advice, commentary or joke is welcome.

Cheers.

  • Hookers and blow is truly the only acceptable loss of the whole roll.
  • What limits where you playing?

    Played some .50/$1

And some SNG's that were too big for my bankroll.

Well for $70 I'd rather spend $70 on hairspray and porn.
  • Fuck me if I didn't answer my own question.
  • yeah pretty sure that explains it.......get $200 on and play ABC poker at 10nl.....can throw in some 2.20 180s or stts, whatever you're good at.........but don't go higher than that!

    nevermind...........

was going to say that is too nitty but saw cash games was included.
  • I'm just gonna go and curl in the fetal position.
  • Just do one of the instant no deposit bankroll promos with PSO or something and use better bankroll management.

Less than 1 buyin for cashgames goes against conventional wisdom.
Most people like to have 10-100 buyins.

People debate about whether 20-60 buyins are sufficient but everyone agrees that less than one ... well lets just say that your risk of ruin is higher than *I* would like...

.50/$1 is too big for your BR as well obv...

also, you're never studied enough..ever..that's what makes poker interesting and fun.

    Edit: click here
  • since you make it seem like you were grinding it out for a long time, what made you take the sudden jump to .5/1?
with $70 bankroll, you should really be playing the 0.01/0.02 tables, you are way ahead of yourself. Grind it out at those tables and build up to $100.
  • You should also try Fixed Limit (say , .10/.20) first. This will give you tonnes of flop and post flop play that you won't get playing NL and it won't be as much of a strain on your "Bank roll". (until you are studying and not playing over your limit, it is an entertainment Budget, not a bankroll)

Some will tell you limit is crap, and sometimes it really is a grind, but it is a great way to learn the basics of hand selection and putting your opponent on a hand.....and you won't be tempted to call that all in with bottom set.....
  • limit is crap:)

    except for 5 card draw
  • Limit is definitely crap.
  • Yeah, but as a training ground to play out a tonne of hands post flop there is no better way......you can graduate up when you are ready.....then call it crap.

If you can't play Limit, No Limit will crush you

+1 or would that be +2 to Kristy's post:)
  • sure if you are good at the psych part of the game and can call the shove with 99 while there is an Ace on the board because you know that your opponent has crap.

but if you are learning and want to see hundreds of flops and showdowns to see first hand the distribution types that different styles of players will bring into the mix then there Limit is where you want to be. Once you can play there, then move into the NL arena. Unless you are a soul reader and can benefit from NL's heavy reliance on aggression and psychology.

    ftw!
  • One big factor, as mentioned in Rounders...

"... some players, pro's even won't touch no limit, they can't handle the swings"

Some really bad players will play limit who won't touch no limit.

You want to make money — You want to play the really bad players.

Another factor is, You get much more postflop play.

    Kristy,

I think you would make an excellent limit player.

    Why?
    In many situations ....
Limit rewards aggression much more than no limit.

You can't get blown off your hand.
You can't get blown off your checkraise.
Overaggression is not punished as severely.
