Huge Stack in Large Field Tourny - How do you do it?

Hi All, I was just wondering how those of you who go into these large field tournaments get these huge stacks. For example, I was in a tournament yesterday on Pokerstars with 1,000 people in it. I went out in 39th position. I thought this was pretty good considering how many people I beat out but in the long run, $16.00 profit sucks for 4 hours of playing.

Anyways, I went out with about $15,000 in chips when there were 3 people at my table that had in the range of $90,000 to $167,000. I was the bottom of all the 39 people so went all in with pocket J's (this is shove right?). The blinds were 1200/2400. Huge stack called me with I think it was KQ. He hit his K and I was out. Was this the right move for me?

How do you get those huge stacks?

    Win some races??
  • Seriously though, you were too low to hope to get much fold equity. You had 6BB and your M was likely 3 or less. Have to turn up the aggression earlier, almost ATC in late position, no raises before you. Attack the weak players (like me) in position.

This and play more loose when the blinds a lower. You might bust earlier in a tournament, but when you are running well you'll have a bigger stack to go deep into a MTT.

This sounds like a smartass answer, but its actually very accurate.

    Uhmm.....this....

if in rebuy, multipy by 2 (spent 120 in a $10 rebuy this weekend..ie. couldn't win a race)
  • Yeah you can gain momentum from steamrolling and winning 3-4 races in a row, and then just completely bully the >12bb stacks, continue to run good, and then........profit??

LOL. Like Wed or Thu last week I was the chipleader in the 20R after the rebuy period was over. I had like 33K (godrun imo) and 2nd had like 20K.

    I didnt cash.

    FML.
  • Yeah I was chipleader with 85k in a 90man SNG at the final table, 5 people left... 2nd place had about 35k...

    2 bad double-ups and all of a sudden I have 18k chips...

    I placed 3rd. Fawk.
  • A little mix of LAG style in position early on and overbetting your hand early on when you find out who the aggro players are allow you to get some chips early.

Main thing has already been said, win races and don't be afraid to shove.....running like god also helps and you will find the more tourneys you play, you will notice a trend. For me its been if I am in the top 100 of any field early on I will most likely make the money and go fairly deep, but if I am getting killed early on I know its not going to be a good day.....

I can relate.....check here for monumental fail with better than 15-1 chip advantage......winning races is something I can improve on....I think
  • Thanks for all the comments. I knew about the win some races/coin flops but I think I am just a big chicken. I think that is one of my problems, I am not agressive enough. I always seem to give the other guy credit for having the best hand if he starts hammering me with raises.

Would you suggest pushing all in then on anything with a positive EV in the beginning of a big tournament?

If you are certain you have +EV then obviously you want to get your chips in. Before the tourny starts, you need to think about how many chips you'll need to get 1st. (multiply stack by # players). How do you get there from here? You need to be aggressive. You need to have reads on your aggressive opponents. Does he cbet all the time? is he playing over 30% of his hands? Is he raising all his Suited connectors/1gappers, and any broadway liek QJ, KT? You can 3bet these players lightly pre flop (ie AQs+, 99+), and I would ENCOURAGE you to do it against players that play anything. If you just smooth call, unless you hit TP or manage to make an overpair you will have no idea where you stand. Simultaneously, you can raise post flop with hands like TPNK and your draws. Obviously though, the best way to play these guys is IN POSITION, and NEVER slow play unless you flop the absolute nuts (ie Quads, SF, AK on a AAK board). Bet your straights and flushes heavily.

Basically, Get yourself into those +EV situations and get some lagtard to raise you, and watch the chips fly your way. That doesn't mean you open raise all in with AA in the first 3 blind raises unless you're sure you're going to get called.

Actually now that I think about it, I've done this move quite a bit in small stakes large field MTTs (90+); if I get AA within the first 3 hands I'll open raise all in. Seriously, 4/5 times I will get a call and its usually by some donk with crap like 8Ts. Nice way to get doubled up early in the tourny.
