My Irregular Cash Game

So after a 5 month hiatus from my "regular" cash game, as they all spend the summer at the cottage and golfing, we finally got back to business tonight. It was a true Canadian Thanksgiving, just like the first Thanksgiving, as we all left the women at home, got drunk (except me) and played cards. Having just rolled my ass home after 7+ hours with these buggers, I can honestly say I learned one hard truth tonight: when I move to Windsor in January, these guys are fucked.

As much as I love to play poker with them, sometimes it gets to be a bit too much. We play .25/.50 ring, $25 buyin. After two laps (9 player table) we end up with 5 players all in preflop, leaving me to figure out all the side pots. Thankfully, it had been a mildly tame game thus far, so there had only been 5 bust outs prior to this, so it wasn't the mountain of chips it could have been. About 3 minutes into figuring out the side pots, a thought popped into my head: fuck this, even if people on Stars are cheating me once in a while, at least I don't have to figure out all this shit.

All in all a good night. I was the only one to last with my initial buyin the entire session and one of only 3 players who made a profit. Actually came out pretty good, as I made $220 in profit. I'm figuring I should be getting a cut at the end of the night though as I was stuck counting everyone's stacks and adding up all the losses & profits to make sure it evened out. As usual, we were out $12, but since the one guy won $500+, he was completely fine with taking it out of his stack.

I was pretty happy with my play, as I did a good job of laying back and letting them bet my hands for me. One of the players commented that, were I to be more aggressive, I would be extremely dangerous. Normally, I'd agree. In this case, since this is the same group that I flopped quads and had a guy bet off $330 into me with K high, I'm ok with just letting things happen as they may.

So that's my fun for the night. Hope you guys had the same profitable endevors too. :)

  • How much was on the table if you were out $12? And somebody was up $500 at a .25/.50c game?

How do I get invited? :D

Ok, I'm going to see if I can remember this correctly...

There was $744 that was losses, but $756 that was won, so we were off $12. And don't ask how we had those numbers when it's a $25 buy in. As for what was on the table, over $1000.

And for getting invited, not happening. It's just work people. That way we can settle up on payday, which is part of what makes the games get a little crazy.

Playing on the sheet always allows people to go nuts!!

You may want to try a limit game.... very few side pots ... the craziness and the bullshit is minimized. It`s a far easier game to control and it is a laid back and more relaxing game. A 1-2 limit game would have blinds of 50 cents and a dollar so it can be played with a simpler chip value structure or even have all chips with a 50 cent value (for your size of game). With a buy-in of 50 dollars I have found that there are very few re-buys (maybe 1 or two in 4 hours of play (most times none)) leave the host with time relax and play. But you must remember it is an entirely different Game. Try it ... You may like it.
  • seems to me that OP is a bit of a jerk. everyone is just having a good time drinking and you there taking the game so seriously, not drinking. sure poker is about winning and stuff, more so in some scenarios than others, but if you going to go into the game thinking you some kind of rounder, than have the courtesy of counting all the chips in the middle while everyone else wants to donk off chips.

next time you run the ring game, if the max. buy-in is $25, which seems really really low for a .25/.50 ring game, than have the stacks of $25 ready in the case, so when someone busts out, you can just take it out and then, it seems like all cash is settled after, write down the name on a sheet in the case of chips.

Why would he change? He has players perfectly willing to drop multiple buy-ins into the game! Side pots are worth the effort we you have fishy players!

To bad you don't like my opinion ... It seem he's not too happy with all the effort it takes to put on that type of home game and I can appreciate that from previous experience. You make me sorry that I offered an alternative that is a little less pressure on the Host. I guess I should keep my opinions to myself. Enjoy your games.

Someone is sensitive. Sorry to offend you.

How about the OP "highly suggests" that anyone who is short stacked just reload? Nobody is broke, no side pots. Just an alternative that puts a little less pressure on the host :)

Fixed limit MIGHT be easier game to manage the pot sizes, but you'd have to constantly remind players what the bet is if they are unfamiliar with the game especially the drunks. From the sounds of it these players would still find a way to get to create many sidepots by not reloading when the chips get down.
  • Sorry, I totally realized I didn't make something very clear in the OP: I'm not the host. Someone else hosts the game as my landlord made it very clear the last time that if we ever held it again in my apartment, the tennant below us would shoot me and bury me in a ditch.

The idea of limit is interesting in theory. I'll definitely think about pitching it to the guys. Honestly, I enjoy NL a lot, I just find it frustrating with some of the guys I play with as they just don't take any responsibility for what happens in the game. I wouldn't have a problem with it, but they're the same ones that, when they win, they get pissed if $1 is missing.

Now, as for kingkao, it's kinda funny that you think I'm a jerk for my OP. I mean, ask my brother, I am a jerk at times, absolutely. I just find it amusing that you think me a jerk for that post. By no means do I consider myself a rounder. Like I said earlier in this comment, I have no problem with taking all the responsibility if other people are simply wanting to have fun, but they don't get to have their cake and eat it too. If they want to have fun, I'm game, but if there's miscounted money at the end, don't get pissed because you were more interested in fun. As for your chip idea, I count out 20 stacks to start the game, as that will get us through the first hour and takes all of the .25, .50 and $1 chips in the three cases we have. After that, it's $5 and $10 chips, so it's quick and easy. We also keep a running list throughout the night. Most nights we keep two lists going, but the one other player who is willing to help keep track of things wasn't there that night.
