time to build another table.

Well, I'm saying goodbye to my old table and building a new one. My old table was pretty much a piece of 8x4 3/4" plywood with carpet underlay and pool table felt wrapped around it, with fancy padded rail around the edge. here is a picture:

I found that you need so much room on the outside of the table for tv trays (or whatever) so that you can hold drinks/snacks for the players. I was against cup holders but now I think I must have them. I was looking around for a good table design when I came across an amazing site:

Not only does this guy give away all his instructions for free (as long as you don't try and sell them), but he's taken great care to build a pretty sexy table and taken pictures along the way. Here is a picture:

So I have picked up most of my supplies and started over. I'll post some pictures once I'm done.

I love that racetrack..... so pretty....

  • that table is awesome

what do you plan to do with your old one?
  • looks nice i've been looking at those same plans for the race track style table. Im going to be building a table pretty soon here. What did you use for the rail on your first table?
  • How heavy is that table? would that be easy to move around?
  • that table is amazing ... anyone building one ... make two i'll buy the other.

(this is because it'll be cheaper than me inevitably sawing off one of my fingers)
  • the_main: I am trying to sell my old one.

Josh FP: I used Perfect Padded Rail (tm) from CasinoSupply.com here: http://www.casinosupply.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=50-0033&Category_Code=OCH. It is essentially pipe insulation, but it's much more dense, and feels very nice and smooth on the outside (with a nice texture). VERY expensive to ship to Canada though.

JuiceMan: my old table is basically one sheet of 3/4" 8'x4' plywood. The new table is going to be one sheet (same size) of oak, one sheet of plywood (spruce), and the rail will also be made from plywood. It will be faily heavy.

Chugs: I am going to be making a stencil of this table so I can make more for friends etc. But these are pretty expensive to build if you use good quality material (nice felt, good wood etc). It also depends on if you need to buy some tools or not.
  • Chugs if your serious, I have one being ordered now (building it for somone). But big $$, PM me.

  • how much are u selling the old one??
  • I'm letting it go for $350. I used durable pool table felt ($110) and the perfect padded rail was $70 USD + $105 USD shipping or something like that. Add up the rest of the material and it comes out to more than $350.

Tell me you didn't know the shipping was this much before you ordered it!

I wish I could tell you that.

This stuff is pretty big for this application (21'), and is pretty heavy. I was expecting something bad and I got it!

It sure made finishing off the table easy, but $200 is pretty steap just for a rail.
  • Good job on the old table!

By the way you people asking to by the "old table", the price is $ 350.00, shipping is $600.00.

Notice he is in Winnepeg! Most of you are in Ontario.

  • I went to a local foam store for some supplies and when asked what I was doing, she responded that at least 20+ people have come into her shop in the last month doing the same thing. =)

I tried to ask around to see if people wanted a table built, but I think a lot of people want the challenge of doing it themselves.
