From good, to bad, to amazing, to OUCH!, all in one hand.

Just thought I would share an interesting hand that occured in the $11 rebuy 20K on Stars tonight.

I felt I had played decent thus far in the tourney, and was trying to gather some chips to make a push into the money.

Unfortunately I did not have a great read on my opponents, seeing as I just moved tables, but I am not sure if it would have helped.

I am *Islander*99.

  • Not sure how you can get a read that your QQ is not good there. Funny hand for sure, I can't remember too many two outer turn escapes being followed up by a one outer river counter escape. I imagine odds of that are a tad slim ;)

I played in it tonight as well, and my final hand was a bit disappointing because I did have a good read on a weak opponent who would make the play I expected (as he had earlier at the table), though at times what you hope for doesn't always work out ;) .

What I liked best about my play here (ignoring the outcome) was that it is a play I would never do with A J normally, but this person just totally loved ace low rag hands for some reason and always raised 1 unit with them so I took a chance, so while I lost I was satisfied with how I played the hand in this specific case.

The rebuy tournaments at stars are an interesting one, especially on the weekends where you will see all sorts of creative plays. Tonight I watched a bet /raise/reraise/reraise all in/call sequence of betting post flop between two people with identical inside straight draws.

Two days ago I finally made a final table (5th place finish) and the funny thing is I never had a AA KK QQ or even JJ hand until the final table, and was well below average chips pretty much the whole way which is why I enjoy the tournaments as you never quite know what to expect.

Good luck in future ones. I promise not to one out you on the river if we share a table in a future one ;) .
  • ouch, that was a nasty outcome. I was in a tourny on Royal vegas poker the other night. I had about 19k in chips, guy has about 10k. Blinds were I think 300/600. I get dealt AA. I bet 1800 preflop, everyone folds except buddy. he raised it to half his stack so I reraise and put him all in. he calls and flips over a AK. I'm happy :). flop comes rag rag K. turn rags river (you guessed it) K. My A's got cracked and now I have about 9k in chips and drop to below average. Funny thing is after I left the tourny in 24th spot earning a measly $5 bucks I check the leader board and buddy was gone out in 25th. He gave up all my chips and finished higher then me. I thought I played that hand right. I got massively outdrawn. I think I was about 90% fav to win that hand. oh well

Interesting note: ugaistheteam qualified for the 2005 WSOP through absolute poker, let's hope for his sake he doesn't make moves like this in the main event.

  • Well, one other aspect of the 10 dollar rebuy tournaments is that for some good higher stakes players it is a place to just go wild and play crazy and strange and hope to get lucky. There was another thread about this a few weeks ago (mainly during the rebuy periods). I remember having Exclusive at my table in one (a person I know in real life who is a great player). He played like a maniac before and after the rebuy period in a way that makes this A 8 call look fantastic. A few at the table thought Exclusive was the worst player ever, yet he was just having goofy fun at a stakes level much lower then he normally plays.

Perhaps that was the case with this other fellow, perhaps not. That's another aspect of the 10 rebuy I like. Still I was happy with the play I made in that specific case whether he was a bad player (as I suspected at the time) or a good player slumming and gambling.

I felt a bit guilty because I made about 300 dollars on this hand by doing nothing (this was at the final table of the rebuy a couple days ago). I did feel bad that Couger lost like that as he was a solid player and he had been sitting on my right for about 4 hours over 2 tabes (we even got moved together). During that whole time we never saw a flop together.
  • how do u know exclusive?
    who are you?

    cheers
    HG
  • Exclusive's name is Noah Boeken and I know him from playing a different card game called Magic the Gathering in the late 90s and early 2000s. Quite a few top Magic players have made the transition to poker including David Williams who finished 2nd in the recent WSOP.

Dave doesn't talk as much about Magic probably because he was banned for a year for cheating (which took place in the World Championship tournament a couple of years ago).
  • Well, first of all, Exclusive isn't always used by noah.
noah boeken and ryan fuller are 2 of my best friends. I know many of the magic guys...

actually i just got back from visitin noah in amsterdam. He lives at marcel luskes house. Sweet deal. Im gonna post a big email about my trip in a few days. I got SO MUCH damn homework to catch up on now.
I played MTG, but i never was that serious to be on the tour.

Monteroy, noah wants to know who you are now lol... if you have msn messenger let me know and ill add you.

    peace
    hg
  • lol...the fun of the MTG gang...I too played (addicted) MTG ... never the big tournies but often enough especially online. My PokerStars pic is from MTG...look me up 10 points to the first that can tell me what it is...lol.
