1 night, 1 thousand $$

maybe not as exciting as the $2 million in 2 months, but tonight I am going to set a goal of making a $1k profit in one night of playing NLH. Sometimes you get a feeling the cards will align in your favour...

Here is my tentative schedule for the evening. The agenda will be flexible depending on how juicy the game is. I have never played at this 1/2 game before but want to check it out so I thought it would make it more interesting if I play at three different clubs tonight. I may skip the 1/2 game depending on how well the early 5/5 game goes:

6:30 - 9:30 5/5 Brampton (goal +$400)
10:00 - 12:00 1/2 Mississauga (goal +$200)
12:30 - ?? 5/5 Woodbridge (goal + $400)

Wish me luck!

If you are going to woodbridge you may make that in about 1/2 hour depending on how fast the game is playing. Just make sure you get out when it hits a lull or the big stacks leave.

I don't know what it is but as soon as a big stack leaves the table it deflates the game.

or lose that... two sided coin, unfortunately. That's the problem with playing with these cannons. Hopefully if all goes according to plan, I will be playing with someone elses money by then :)
  • Good luck Jim!

Let us know how it turns out.
  • No doubt in my mind you can do it. Good luck!!!
  • good luck JAH, you can do it!
  • So, how'd it go?
  • Glad to see you are still as results oriented as ever JAH.

ok, so obviously things did not go as planned. I did make it to two of the three clubs and never bothered with the 1/2 club. Might check it out next Friday as they now run a 2/5 game that starts early on a Friday.

Well my game plan was on schedule, and I was up about $100 in my first hour when the following hand came up. I got dealt KK in late position and it was raised to $25 by a semi loose player (this guy had a joker tatooed on his forearm so you know he is going to be loose). I decide to see a flop and hope to avoid an ace. Based on previous hands, this guy likes to continuation bet so I am hoping he will come out with a big raise on the flop. There are two other callers. The flop comes queen high and he makes it another $25 to go. I figure he has a smaller pair and is trying to see where he is so I push it to $125. It is folded around to him and he ponders and just calls. The turn is garbage and he goes all in for about $150. I don't see how the turn could have helped him and I am leaning towards calling. He then starts to tell me to fold because he has me beat and he will show me his cards if I fold. I take this to mean he is probably weak and is trying to get me off the hand. I ask him if he can beat two pair and he says he can. I don't understand why someone with trips (this is the only hand with the board that would beat two pair) would want me off the hand when they can easily double up. He then tells me I am taking too long so he knows he has me beat or I would have called by then. I decide to call because I put him on a middle pair or AQ and he flips over AA and I lose a big pot. If I would have raised pre-flop, likely all my money would have been in the middle anyways.

Later on I get dealt J10d in early position and just call a $10 forced strattle. There are five other callers when it gets backed to the strattle and he makes it $50 total. I have about $120 behind and figure this guy is just trying to buy the free strattle puck so I push. It is folded around to the strattle who insta calls with QQ. Nice, running into queens on the strattle. This night is not going as planned. I get a 10 on the flop but don't improve and I am down $400 in about three hours. On to club 2, 5/5 in Woodbridge.

I get there at 9:30 and there is one seat open. The first interesting hand is when I get j2d in the bb. There are about 6 callers so I just check. The flop comes all diamonds and I have flopped a flush. I bet out for $40 and get one caller (SB). I'm worried about another diamond which does come on the turn and so when the small blind checks, I also check. The river pairs the board and the SB makes it $80. I don't like that forth diamond or the boat possibilities so I fold and the other players shows me a king high flush. I'm lucky I only lost $40 on that hand with two players flopping flushes.

Blackmagicz shows up a little later and by then a couple aggressive asian players have joined the table. Again I get dealt KK and this time I decide to raise to $30. I get two callers and again a queen high flop. It is checked to me and I raise to $40 and both players call. I get a third king on the turn (the nuts so far) and make quads on the river. One player calls me all the way down and I rake a nice pot.

    to be continued.....
  • I ended up staying till about 5am.....such a shitty night for me in woodbridge.

    QQ < KK AIPF
    AA < J10

    Then finally...

K7 vs AQ and A9 I turn the flush on an ace high flop after pushing
and 10 10 vs some random hand (the asian that likes to make his hand on the turn meanwhile he check raises the flop with air)

Broke even performance for 6 hours....most i was ever up was 100 bucks...then ended up having to grab a redbull for the all day softball tourney as I had 3 hours sleep...lol

Pokerjah come out Monday night if possible to play the 5/10 game..plays like the 5/5 with the same players but just deeper stacks so more opportunity to grab..plus they get 3 tables.

I might one of these days but unlike a lot of these guys, I don't have a money tree in the backyard.

Well not much to say beyond my last post. Ended the night down $360 after a small profit in Woodbridge. I guess I will have to rename this post, 1 month, $1k :) Really, the one hand that cost me a profit on the night was the KK vs AA hand. To be continued next Friday.

I will probably head to Mississauga for the early 2/5 game and then back to Woodbridge to finish off the night against the cannons.
  • There were quite the cannons there last night...main table had about 12K on it and 2nd table had about 8K on it......

Definitely the best 5/10NL game in the GTA right now.....I love how guys can call off 600.00+ with a flush draw heads up and get there.....or 250 for a back door straight runner runner turn and river....

Had my usual 400.00 session in under 3 hours, nice to book a solid win again after hovering around even for the past couple of weeks or +100 each session.
  • Can you guys pm the info for the woodbridge 5/5 games. I really need to get some live play in. thx

You got to try a more positive outlook and thanks the vote of confidence (as usual).

Anyway, I decided to start the night at the 2/5 game in Mississauga at this club I have never played at. I arrived around 6:15 and the 2/5 game had been going already since 2:30 in the afternoon. I spotted a couple players from the 5/5 game in Brampton that I usually play on a Friday night and had to sit around for about 45 minutes to start playing.

Talk about a passive 2/5 game, where about 50% percent of the pre-flop action there is no raising. Average stack is about $300 so I buy in for the average.

The first big hand I limp with 22 and flop a set. I bet $50 on the flop get one caller, bet $100 on the turn and when there are four diamonds on the river we both check it down. He mucks and I take down a nice $300+ pot.

A get dealt AKoff on the button when there is an automatic strattle and I make it $40 to go and get two callers. It comes a 6 high flop and one player makes it $50 to go. I decide to call because I think I may be ahead as I can't see how this flop helped anyone. If I can spike an A or K I will be way ahead and the other player (who is a calling station) also calls. The next card is a Q and the same player makes it $100 this time. I decide to give up at this point and the calling station calls the $100. The river is a J and they both check. The raiser shows pocket 8s and the other guy A7off. Not sure what he was doing in the hand w A7off?

The very next hand I get dealt AQ and this time I make it $25 to go and get five callers. The flop comes Q high w two spades and I bet out for $40. One player raises $80 and I
make it another $120 on top. This guy had made a comment on the previous hand that I should have re-raised on the flop when the guy bet $50 and I would have won the hand. So I think to myself, I will use his approach against him. He pushes for another $100 and I call. He tells me I am good and he is on a spade draw. He doesn't get there and my chip stack is growing nicely. His advice was sound and he seems to know the basics of the game, but $300 on a flush draw??

A few hands later I get QQ and raise it to $30 and another player makes it $100. I decide to put him all in as he only has about $75 behind and its going in anyways and make it $200. To my surprise, the calling station also calls. I ask him if he wants to check it down, forgetting there is another player in the hand who is all-in, and get a well deserved speech from the dealer. We do check it down and my queens hold up for a $600 pot.

At this point I am sitting at about $1,450 in chips and have surpassed my one night goal of making $1k. Its still only around 8:00, only playing about an hour, and decide to play for another 20 minutes before I head to the Woodbridge 5/5 game.

Last interesting hand of the night, I get dealt Q10off and it is raised to $15. With about 6 callers already in, I decide to call. The flop comes 789 and it is checked around. The turn brings me the nuts with a J and I bet out for $40 and get one caller (my favourite calling station). The river brings another 7 and decide to make a small value bet so I bet $50. The calling station, who has built his stack up to about $500 announces he is all-in. With such a small pot relative to his raise, I really think the 7 made his boat, so I ask him if he will show if I fold and he says yes. I flip over my straight and CS shows 7k for trips. Buddy who had chased the flush earlier starts to go on a rant about how could I fold the straight? he can't seem to understand it and I tell him if he wants to risk $500 when so many hands have you beat, that's up to him.

My stack is at exactly $1,304 so I tip the dealer $4 a couple hands later and get up and leave the club with my $1k profit. Not bad for under two hours work :)

I make it to the Woodbridge club at 9pm (as the game started before 9 the previous week) and proceed to sit around until 11 waiting for the game to start. BlackmagicZ is the second person to show up as well. At 11:15 I decide to call it a night and head home with my first $1k profit!

My advice, set poker goals and put yourself in a position to achieve them. Having a deck hit you in the face doesn't hurt as well.

Sorry to let you down GTA.

Congrats on hitting the goal, but why did you ask if he wanted to check it down? Shouldn't you be trying to bust him too?

Congrats on the $1k night! But want to know why you think $300 on a flush draw is so bad, it's $2/5 so isn't that pretty standard?

I meant getting 2:1 on his money with nine outs (8 really since I had the ace spades). If you mean a lot of players will push at 2/5 on a flush draw, yes. Most players in these games buy in light, unlike a casino. I lot of the players buy-in for less than $200, even at 5/5.

This 2/5 game was actually better than most since a few players were likely still around from the start of the afternoon.

this is correct but he was actually starting to make the odd large bet and I didn't want to face one of these big raises if an A or K came on the flop.
