Party poker tourney structure

I don't know if its the same on other sites but with party poker's tourney chip stack sizes and the blind structures and times, if you play only top hands from top positions you'll be down to 5M or less by the time you get your first or 2nd decent hand in a proper position. You are basically all in. Is this specific to these tourney's or are other sites like that? Whats my strategy for that, I'm feeling like i need to be more aggressive early on...whenever I have a decent stack at the early stage i always do well but it takes 4 or 5 tourney's to do that. My mid to end game feels strong but the early game not so much. is this why people don't like party poker?

thx

  • This is why I stopped playing at Party. Too much of a push fest on the bubble (STT)

P* usually breaks the bubble during 100/200 with an average stack of 3300. It's still pushbot poker for the short stack, put at least you don't "have" to call because your own stack is on life support.
  • Actually, PartyPoker's regular tournaments have a higher Patience Factor than those of PokerStars and FTP. This is one of the many reasons why I love playing so much at PartyPoker.

P* and FTP are two of the worst sites to play tournaments if you want to make money as only ~25% of tournament players there can beat the rake! I am willing to admit that I am not among that small minority of winners at P*.

  • By "regular tournaments" do you mean all their tournies with guarantees?
  • No, as you can see in Online Poker Tournament Ratings, PartyPoker's $109, $55, $33, shootout and many other tournaments have 3,000 starting chips, 15-minute blinds and a Patience Factor of 8.11. In contrast, FTP's $75, $55 and other tournaments only has 2000 starting chips, 10-minute blinds and a Patience Factor of 7.54.

  • FTP's $75, $55 and others have 3000 starting chips, and blinds are usually 10 mins for the early levels, then 12 minutes, then 15 minutes later on.
  • patient factor was a lesson for me, thanks. so then the difference in style from what i am expecting (from reading books for example) is from the rookie players maybe? i just find its an all in fest but im thinking now i have to mix good poker with dealing with tons of all in plays.
  • my question is more about this: if i play only a tighter range say 22-AA, decent aces, and even suited connectors and pay any attention to position, ill be all in within 30-40 minutes without ever playing a hand, and i may not even get a decent hand to go in with. And if i double up or triple up early, then by the 3rd or fourth round, I become a threat to the small stacks and they start going all in. there's not much poker going on here other than shoving, where are the deep stack tourney's or am i missing something?
  • This is way too tight and be careful of 22-66. Small pairs usually get dominated quickly if you don't hit a set/quad.

In position you could be looking at K-9 or K6 suited etc. as well depending on your table reads and how aggressive you feel comfortable getting. take a look at a bunch of starting hand suggestion tables and figure out which ones feel better for your playing style.

so yeah, this is way too tight (just the humble opinion of one who still has very much to learn)
  • that helps, i think i have a good concept of the game, just not sure about how to play the first few levels, everything i read says play tight but i think that's for deeper stack tourneys no? this all helps though, ima experiment a little with it
  • Most of the PartyPoker tournaments I play have a Patience Factor of at least 8, which means that I get to play more hands than most live tournaments. Are you not playing the regular tournaments with 3,000 chips and 15-minute blinds?

yes i am but i haven't been opening my range while in position so maybe that has to do with it, and i may have just had five or ten bad games in a row that change my thoughts prematurely. I wasn't sure where these tourney ranked as far as patience factor so now that i do maybe i can just play with more confidence. I'm good at the middle game (with a half decent stack), and the end game, but if i play straight forward poker in the beginning it seems way to often im at less than 2000 with the blinds at 150 300. by the time i double up im way behind. lemme grind this out a little and see what i come up with.

    thx all
