  • I personally think you need to ask yourself what type of game you want to focus or specialize in. They are all different animals and if your a new player sometimes some of them can be overwhealming. Is it cash games, stt's or mtt's?
  • I still like Moose's answer the best ;)

Jokers, I think you need to give a bit more info on what your goals are? What do you want to learn?
  • I'm not sure myself. I was playing lower limit cash games today.
    I'm up $5 so that's a start.

I'll keep you updated on my progress. I'm sure I'll be broke in a week.
  • To give a more accurate response you should post:

    1. How long have you been playing
    2. What/who do you normally play with (recreational home games/tournaments, play for fun, play for 1000s....etc)
    3. What are your poker goals
    4. What kind of commitment are you going to make to the game (no point of reading several books and then getting into advanced topics if you are going to play a home game once a week on a friday)
    5. Are you playing online or live or both?
    6. What resources are you currently using now?

If you can give some answers to these questions I think you will get some good starting points. There is a wealth of knowledge on this board with some really good players who will help you as much as they can.

    Cheers

Don't be short-termed results oriented. Understand that over a significant sample size (around 100,000 hands) that you'll have played enough poker to determine if you are a winning player or not.

As for where to start, I agree with the others we need more info. No limit, fixed limit? Hold'em, Omaha, mixed games? Stakes? experience?
  • The Ethics of Liberty by Murray Rothbard.

If you mean poker, anything by that Skalansky fellow or 2+2 publishing is good. Most of the rest is trash.
  • If you read Play Poker Like the Pros, by Phil Hellmuth jr., I guarantee you that you will see dynamic changes in your game.

    Good luck.
  • Thanks for the help.

    No experience.
    I bought 2 books
Winning Low Limit Hold Em -Lee Jones
    Small Stakes Hold Em -Sklansky

Playing .25/.50 limit now but would like to move up.
NL seems too risky for me. I tried a few sng's and find they take too long.
I wouldn't have the patience for tournaments unless I was hungover.

    Are trainining sites worthwhile?
    Keep it coming.
  • If I may shamelessly plug a member's product, Dave Scharf put out a decent beginner's book for limit Hold 'em that is probably still kicking around the Amazon.com warehouse.

Is it Winning at Poker? For $10 I guess I can't go wrong. I'll pick it up
  • That would be it.

Keep track of hands where you had a tough decision, and post them in the LIMIT HOLD'EM strategy section.
