The RCMP and my poker game

Funny story well more like weird.

I have three friend who are all RCMP, Now every week I run a cash game at my house. During conversation with the RCMP they find out I am running a home game and would like in.

Well problem is I and most of my other poker playing pals are pot hounds(nothing heavy just pot). We take a break almost every hour for weed. Now I know these guys and even if we blazed one up in front of them in my house. I doubt they would say anything but it puts them in a very awkward possession and I don't want that. These are friends.

My only option is to tell them I am full every week or get they guys to give up pot. Yeah right.

Your thoughts?

  • Send the pot to me. I'll hold it for you.
  • I dont' think that's a huge problem. Go outside to smoke a joint. If you smoke it right in front of them...it does put them in a weird position. If they don't see it....not so much. They're obviously going to know your doing it, it's a matter of whether it's thrown in their faces.

I would say it's more of just a courtesy thing.

As long as you tell your friends that "smoke" to go for a walk when they want to burn and freshen up, i.e. chew some gum and an Axe spray, the RCMP guy's should be none the wiser. I'm sure they won't care that anyone "smokes" but they may want to find your source for the "smoke" right. That would ruin a whole lot more than your game. And you may want to give the RCMP guys a heads up that there will be guy's, including yourself, "smoking", because it may be a problem for them, professionally and personally.
  • I'm not even so much concerned about them smelling it on you, or wanting to find your source. Keep in mind this is their private life when they aren't on duty and they want to come to your game to enjoy it. I'm sure they know that if they chose to gather information about a front line pot dealer while at a poker game they'd NEVER be invited back at a cost of getting one PSP charge or whatever.

The issue for them (in my opinion) would be being associated with it and that getting back to others in the service or superiors. What they don't see, don't 'know' about can't be associated with them.

I used to play with some prison guards out west and basically they could care less what people were smoking. I always just played the courtesy card and didn't do it in front of them. For the most part I think they were happy about it hoping it would take you off your game.

When you are an RCMP officer you are always on duty, it`s a part of the job. You have to let them know about the "smoke" or lie to them and say the game has been cancelled indefinitely and you'll let them know if it resumes later on. Two choices one or the other, simple as that.

LOL, u must be kidding right? Must be some dumb (or perhaps just fragrant dumb) mounties. Unless they are REALLY truely good friends Steiner would be playing with fire... An officer of the law, be it mountie or local cop, is always on duty and if someone thinks otherwise they are sadly misinformed.

Moose's suggestion is probably the best one... :)
  • tell them that some of your friends like the odd joint and if they feel uncomfortable playing in this environment, you understand. Just get their word they won't harrass your buddies or make a big deal about it.

    This...

Have a friend who became a cop not that long ago. He specifically said "If you are doing anything illegal or borderline illegal, don't tell me anything."
  • simple solution....stop smoking weed!
  • They are friends you said. It is very simple. Been there, done that... Tell them they are welcome to join the game, but also tell them there will be pot smoking going on...Let them decide if they want to put themselves in the position.

Be sure to ask your regulars how they feel about the company as well. Your pot smoking regulars may not feel comfortable....Most members are pretty understanding in respects to these type situations in personal life scenarios.
  • I'd just be upfront and honest with them about it beforehand. They must know that you do it or are friends with people that do. If they think it could be detrimental to their job then they wont go.

EDIT... ya, what Dennis said above... missed that.
  • Your RCMP buddies are fine. I am sure they do not mind and even if their superiors or someone finds out, nothing will happen. Cops protect cops because if anything like this hits the press, it gets blown up and people goes crazy.

So anyways, keep everyone smoking. We in Canada after all and its widely accepted as long as you don't have more than a couple trees growing in your basement.
  • Thanks for the input guys.

In the end they are friends and I think that I am going to be truthful and tell them that if that offends them then they should stay away.
