Help finding decent poker table

Hi! I need a lot of help. I don't play poker myself, but my boyfriend is an avid poker player. He's been wanting a table for a while but I have no idea about the game, and I have even less of an idea what is decent for a table. I'm willing to spend about $1000.. would prefer to spend less, but I'm not sure what it is going to cost for a decent table.

I've gotten the idea from him that he's looking for a padded table. And probably to sit 8 people, so not so much the oval shaped tables. I've been looking at ebay and other sites, but I haven't found much Canadian and I'm debating now going to a local furniture store or two, but as I have no idea what I'm really looking for still, I thought I would ask some opinions first.

I'm sure this comes down a lot to personal preference, but is there anything specifically I should look for? Some have cup holders, some don't, some have removable rails, some don't. Is there one or the other that is better? Is there anyone around who can recommend a particular type, or a particular site? Or even tell me what to stay away from? Any help would be much appreciated.
