Learn Limit Before playing No-Limit?

I've been reading this new book on poker, and it tells me that in order to be a good no limit player, I should master and be awesome at Limit first. I'm just wondering what everyone else's opinion's are on this matter.
I'm not a really huge fan of Limit, but if it makes me a better no limit player then i'll do it.
WHat does everyone else think?

  • probably because limit is more technical and your decisions are based a lot more on pot odds, etc. There are probably a lot of good NL players that didn't start with limit. Personal preference. Limit to me just seems like a game of chasing as you can't raise players out of the hand. Harder to control the action.

lol, just a different game, those big pairs (unimproved) go way down in value.. Conversely the suited connectors, especially paint, go way up in value... Just a matter of understanding the vallues in each game... I think that limit does teach you discipline and value betting. Not that you can't learn that in NL but it may be a more expensive lesson...
  • I used to play limit all the time at the casino when I would go and found it very frustrating that I couldn't end the hand on the flop when pairing less than an Ace.
when playing QK suited for example and flop comes 4c, 9s, Kh, I just want to take the pot down there and then.
  • Daniel Negreanu says that limit is the best game to learn first.

You learn post flop play much faster by playing limit.

I strongly suggest you learn to play limit first.
  • "limit is a science, NL is an art"... someone said this
  • Mastering limit poker will help your no limit game and vice versa in the long run. I don't think you necessarily have to learn to play limit first to be a good no limit player. Myself I started playing no limit first and now I play limit for the most part. My no limit game is okay but don't play much of it anymore, mostly just tourneys.

Its up to you if you want to go that route, I dont think it neither right or wrong.

If you do go and play limit it can be very frustrating at the microlimits. Lots of players seeing the flop and you will get outdrawn alot with your good hands.
