D'oh, D'oh, D'oh

O.K., heres the situation...

Opened up an account @ Party last Wednesday with the strict determination of builing my Roll.

Opened up with $100... Wednesday Nov 10/04, as of Friday Nov.13/04 my roll had swelled to about $800. A glorious start! I coasted through Saturday (didn't play) and I beleive this is where my head swelled bigger then my roll.

Uh-Oh,

Sunday Nov 14/04 - Took a big hit! Down to about $600. No problem though, I'm still sitting pretty. Besides I'm better than any of these fish! They just got lucky..... Or am I not playing well? Nah, they're just getting lucky!

Monday Nov 15/04 - KABOOM!! Down to $400. Frustration sets in. Can't catch a flop for the life of me. Zigging when I should have Zagged, Folding when I should be calling, Rasing when I should be folding, etc., etc., etc...

Some help please!! A bandaid perhaps?? Someone? ANYONE? Are these the normal fluctuations of a bank roll that I've heard about? Or does it seem a little extreme? I've never experienced this before and I seriously need to do something to STOP THE BLEEDING!!!!

I'm actually in fear of playing poker because I'm afraid of losing more. And thats exactly what will happen to me if I play with that fear.

I gotta get my mind right. C'mon guys (and girls) let me know what I should be doing at a time when Up is Down, Black is White, and pots are scarce!?!

  • What are you playing? What limit? You may be playing higher than your bankroll allows. Poker, especially online, extra-especially PartyPoker, have large variances. If your roll can not handle them you will go broke.
  • Yeah forgot to mention that... I've been playing $2-4 (thats the limit I built my stack on)although I don't know how much longer I can keep that up.

Looks like I might have to move down to a lower table until my confidence comes back
  • I fell in love with pacific ... where in the course of a less than 1 week i took a 100 buy-in and turned it into 800 cashed out most of it, and left 200 to play ... ran it down to $14. ran that $14 upto over $500 ... ran that $500 down to $200.

playing on sites like party and pacific can be huge variance. The problem is sometimes the insane bad beats aren't hitting you. plus when you're up you start to get careless, see a flop that you shouldn't because "i'm up and better than them", peel off one more card cause these guys have nothing etc... suddenly you're making bad moves.

honestly players who are losing will tighten up and play better poker sometimes. when you're winning you make bad plays.
  • I haver the same problem. I go on a huge roll and build my bankroll up only to drop it in half the time it took me to build it up.

It's a brutal cycle with me - I wish I had the answers to why this happens to people.

I agree its probably psychological - "hey, I made $600 this week, I can afford to see this flop" sort of thinking.
