I'm heading to WSOP and now I'm terrified.

So here's my scoop, and I'm wondering if any of you have any info to share?
I am leaving Friday morning to play in Event 51 of the 2009 WSOP on Saturday.
I have just been informed that this event has a seat cap and there are only 730 seats left for the event.
What are the chances of me getting down there the day before, heading straight from the airport to the RIO on Friday morning, only to be told that there aren't any seats available?
Will I be able to buy a seat from somebody selling one off in the line while I'm there etc.? Should I be worried?
Nothing would suck more than planning this whole trip, taking the time off work, to get down there and find out I can't play.
Thoughts?

  • I thought you could preregister online?
  • Only up to 2 weeks before. Pre-registration is now closed. I called last week and they told me (at the RIO) to simply show up. It has never been a problem in the past. But this time, they are capping this event. I have always figured that it all went by the number of entrants and if they got 5000 people, so be it...the bigger the pot.
You can imagine how I feel at this moment to be going down not knowing.
  • Last year and this year they have capped the events.

Pre-registration is NOT done online, you only print out the form and either wire transfer the funds and fax form or send money order and form in th email. Yes pre-registration is closed for this event.

This is the last $1500 event that is on the weekend so as per last year I am expecting this event to sell out. That being said you still should be able to get a seat in this event come friday morning but not garanteed. I am also playing this event and have pre-registered and also leaving Friday the 26th.

Not sure how long you are staying in Vegas but there is another $1500 that start on the Monday, and there is also MegaStack Series at Caesars Palace and DeepStack Series at Venetian going on while you are there
  • I was thinking the same thing... you are probably okay if you go Friday morning and register, but you never know.

Worst case... take the $1500 and you can buy into several Deepstack events over the weekend. At the Venetian, there is a $550 on Saturday, a $1070 on Sunday and a $330 on Monday.
  • I've played in (and won) enough tournaments. How do you think I'm paying my way? :)
My dream has been to play in the WSOP. If I can't do this, the other tourneys would just be a continuation of what I have been doing all along.
At this point there is nothing I can do but pray.
I'm now looking at it like this... I get to find out if lady luck is on my side the moment I get there.
I'll get off the plane at 10:15am on Friday, and hop a cab straight to the RIO.
If worse comes to worse, I'll sit by the registrar and hopefully somebody will cancel.
    Thanks guys. Wish me luck.
    To you as well.
    See you at final table.
  • Was it Rio that told you there are only 730 seats left out of how many? Last year, this Saturday $1,500 event was a sell-out with 2,718 entries.

Seats are not transferable AFAIK. There are a whole bunch of people that fly or drive the day before to buy into an event, so depending on the cost of changing plans in order to arrive earlier for Event 51/54, it may be worth it for peace of mind.

  • Turns out there are 2700 seats. Whoever I spoke to at the RIO was misinformed and was talking about a 1000 seat tourney happening on the Friday night.
As of right now, they have sold over 500 of them.
I can't change it to the Monday. I'm leaving Tuesday so what's the penalty if I decide to stay for an extra day and play in Monday's event? Are they going to charge me a fortune or can I simply tell the airline I missed my flight?
  • Dude, you seriously don't sound like you are mentally ready to play any poker, nevermind the WSOP.
  • And you say that why?
Is there anything wrong with covering all your bases and knowing all your options?
I don't know about you but if I were climbing Everest, I'd be asking every question and researching everyone and everything before I go.
    But that's just me.
Like you said, I'm going to play with the big boys.
I joined this forum to find out every detail I'm missing.
Last year I came in 4th in a deep stack tourney while I was there.
    I want the WSOP.

  • Thanks Steve. I really appreciate it.
  • Knuckles, if there is anything I can do let me know, as I am in Vegas now. As an aside can one preregister for someone else?

No you need id and a players card.

I am flying in Friday as well, I don't think you will have a problem registering for the Saturday event. I was thinking of playing the Saturday event but I figured as a warm up I may play some satellites and deep stacks at the Venetian or Cesars before I get into WSOP swing.

Basically get there that night and register, if you wait till the morning of you may have a problem. But judging from the way registration and efficiency has improved at the RIO I think you are safe.
  • Thanks. Much appreciated. I have a friend living in Vegas and I already asked about this but you have to register in person. I agree, I'm going to register, take the shuttle to Caesars, have some lunch in the food court and then play in either the 3pm or 3:30 tourney at Harrah's or Caesars.
