cheapest phone calls from Vegas

Hey,

GF and I are going to Vegas the last week of June. I have a pay-as-you-go Fido phone. I will need to use the phone about 5-10 minutes per day. Although I could use payphone as well. What is the best option? One of those calling cards?

    Get a prepaid calling card ($10 or $20.) here in Canada before you leave. make sure it has an 800 number that you can access there to make your calls. Then use either a payphone or hotel room to make your calls. Much cheaper..

    when i went to atlantic city for a week i used my cell for about 5 minutes and used up around $30 on my phone with roaming charges. definitely not cheaper than a phone card.

    Most Hotel lobbies have prepaid long distance card machines somewhere in them. Pick one up and use the local payphone or room phones if the calling card has a 702 area code number you can call as you won't get charged for a local call from your room. Don't use your fido prepaid. Regardless of whether you are calling an 800 first then dialing a Canadian number fido will still charge you about 95 cent a minute for that call.

    Just to add to this. I agree, don't use your cell except for emergencies, it really adds up quick. Voodoo, I have bought prepaid cards there in Vegas before but they are more expensive per minute than the ones you buy here in Canada prior to going. You have to make sure the card you get has a US 800 access #. The one I currently have is a $20 Ci Ci phone card. I used it quite a bit the last 2 trips to Vegas in Nov and Dec and it still has $10. left on it. Hopefully it still works next week as it is supposed to expire after 6 months.

    Yeah CiCi is a good card, I buy those as well and use them also for my long distance calls from home. You can get them online from a site called phonecarddepot dot com and they are discounted 15% I believe as the last one I picked up last week was a $10 card and it cost me 8.50. FYI

    Nice, didn't know you could get them discounted like that.. I really don't use them a lot as at my home and office. I am on IP phones so no long distance in NA but I do use them when traveling or if I place a long distance call from my cell on occasion...

    Just so I understand how these work... You buy the Prepaid phone card and then call the US 1-800 number from my room phone or pay phone. Does it then prompt you to enter the actual number you want to call?

    I have not used one of these before (obv...).

    Yes, you dial the 800#, enter the code on your card and dial the number. It deducts minutes from your card as you use them. I think my last $20. card had something like 7-800 min on it... Lasts forever it seems like. Keep in mind most of them expire in 6 months so don't buy too big a card at once.

    I think with Bell you can get a prepaid text plan for 100 text messages while in the US for $40CDN with no roaming charges. Its a good deal if you are sending a lot of text messages. Check with them for the exact charge.

    Thanks again for the tips. Are the CiCi cards good for calls from US or Canada to anywhere in Canada or USA (i.e. from and to anywhere in North America)? Looks like a great deal if so!

    Yes, at least all the ones I have purchased. Just make sure it has a US 800 # on it...

    Check with your hotel first as some rip you off just for using your room phone compared to a pay phone. I think Binion's had free room calls while Imperial Palace and Treasure Island had a surcharge even for local and toll-free calls.

    Go buy a cheap unlocked GSM phone...check ebay for the cheapest phones. Then while in vegas goto a Verizon/ATT/etc place and pick up a pay as you go SIM card.

    I know a lot of people who do that while they are in the states, just switch sim cards and you can call locally/text all day :)

    Very interesting, I had wondered about this. However it looks like they run about $100. then add a sim card and isn't that gonna be more than a typical trip phone cost would be. Do you know if you can rent/buy them locally in Vegas?

    Sorry I wouldn't know the exact details of buying a phone in vegas, but l don't see why not, I mean pay as you go here in canada doesn't require any information you just pick up the phone (from futureshop/etc) and turn it on.

    I guess its really a benefit if you travel to vegas (or the states) more than once or twice a year cause roaming and long distance can add up quick on a canadian phone.

    When I am down in vegas we just txt each other and there are no costs associated with that.

    ha ha, yeah, a bunch of buddies were down.......phone bill for May (1/2 my time down there) is $180 more than normal bill.

    Will have to plan ahead for this next time.

    Just walk into Walmart. prepaid phones can be had there for $20-$30.
