New Rule at WSOP?

I was just reading Lee Watkinson's blog about a new rule at the WSOP this year that is allowing players who have not started play in their scheduled event by the second level, to a full return of their funds if they desire.

His blog can be found here:

He makes a couple of points. Not sure if I think this is a good rule or not as it does allow players to rail their table prior to deciding to play or not. Just think if you do sign up, especially at an event such as this, you should be committed to play regardless and no refund.

Thoughts?

  • Agreed, once the event has started, there should be no refund and the paid-for stack should remain until it is blinded out. Let's say that Phil Hellmuth is still playing in the final table of a previous event, he can decide to unregister before the start time of the upcoming event or just show up later when he can. There are so many ways to abuse a policy of being able to get a refund just by not showing up by the second level.

By the way, if I end up playing my seat but see SirWatts and other tournament champions sitting in the same table as mine, I will run away like a little girl :-[ and ask for a different day.

  • Awful rule, Expect to see major abuse.

I guess you guys are all going to want to play on the first day, scope out the table a and then register for the second day if it looks too tough...
  • i just don't understand the point of this rule. the cons way outweigh the pros by far.
  • Hellmuth is notorious for arriving late. So if he's later than two levels, he should get his money back? No. He often arrives two or three hours late all the time, but I'm sure he doesn't expect a refund. And what if he didn't make it in time, and the TD took his chips off the table and he was refunded his money back? Only for him to come down an hour later and find out he can't play, here's your buyin back? Jesus, would he ever freak on the TD's then.
