Atlantic City Trip Report

Overall, I didn't end up playing as much poker as I was expecting. The girlfriend decided to not shop as much as she planned, and I got a little sick for a couple days therefore less time for poker. I had a great time though, so not a big deal at all. The following was my limited poker experiences:

I was staying at Resorts mainly because I got a cheap deal on Expedia.ca. Wandered around it a little bit and played some late night slots with the gf, but never touched anything else there. Pretty nice hotel overall though. We were on the third floor with the pool and hot tub, so we'd head out there at least once a day just to relax for a bit.

Trump Taj was next door. Very nice hotel and casino. Lots of cash games going on. I think there's something like 50+ tables available. The down side was the rewards card was only good for the Trump casinos, so I decided to avoid it altogether.

The next casino down the line (heading north along the boardwalk) was Showboat. Here's where I did my poker playing. Nice hotel and casino as well. I liked the Mardi Gras theme. There was a two for one deal going on at the buffet there which we tried out. Pretty good food. Some seafood but not enough for my liking. Overall, a nice dinner.

First poker I sat down to was the $65 2pm tournament. 10,000 starting chips and a decent blind structure. 45 players entered with top 5 in the money. First hour was pretty quiet. Not too many big hands. I managed to chip up to around 16,000. Biggest pot took place during the second blind level. Folded to me in the CO+1. I looked down at 9s9h and did a standard 3xBB raise. Folded to BB who called. Flop comes 9cKh3s. BB was playing pretty tight so I knew that he had a hand to call here. I thought that I could check the flop and induce a bet from him if he hit the K. I checked, he bet out half the pot. I called slowplaying my trips. Turn is Ac. I like this card because I was pretty much putting him on AK here. If that's what he has he almost has to call my turn bet. I bet a third the pot and he calls. River is a blank. I bet out again a third of the pot (or so). He tanks for a while and calls with AK and I take down a nice pot.

After another hour of up and down play, I found myself shortstacked with about 15 people left. I'm in the SB and I look down at 9c8c with a couple limpers in the pot. I decide to push for about 7BBs and try to take it down preflop, or worst case scenario I'll hopefully have two live cards. MP limper says "well, i guess i'll gamble" and calls me with A6o. Board bricks out and I finish in 15th. Not great, but not bad for my first real casino tournament.

I also did get some time to play some $1-$2 cash games at Showboat as well. Bought in for $200 and played for a few hours. Didn't see a lot of action and was pretty card dead for most of it. Won a decent pot with pocket As on a 633 rainbow board. Villian made a good lay down with his pocket 7s to save him some more money though. Biggest hand of the day was my losing hand though. EP limper. I'm on the button with KsQs and I just call as well. BB checks and there's three to the flop of KhKd7d. BB checks. EP limper (who is this older drunk guy and since he's joined the table he hasn't shut up yet; not to mention he can barely pay attention to the game and the dealer has been constantly nagging him to put in the blinds and act when it's his turn) bets out. I smooth call. BB folds. Turn is a beautiful Qc. EP bets out again. I raise. He reraises. He has to have an King here or he's completely bluffing me. I reraise him all in (he didn't have a lot on the table because he was going to rebuy in the following hand). He calls showing AK. I flip up KQ and he pretty much knocks his chair over in anger hitting the guy next to him. As he's storming around, the dealer peels of an Ace on the river and I get up and leave with around $50 of my original $200.

Despite my losses, it was a great trip. After checking out most of the casinos along the boardwalk, I think my next trip down I'd like to stay at the Tropicana. Beautiful hotel and casino. Good cash games and tournaments going on there. Their seafood buffet was amazing (crab legs, all kinds of shrimp, lobster ravioli, stuffed crab, cat fish, stuffed flounder and so on). Not to mention, the Tropicana is huge! So many shops and restaurants in it. My gf and I actually got kind of lost trying to find the seafood buffet ;)

  • Nice report! They really did a good job on the Tropicana. I'm gonna try and stay there next time I go down. Stayed at Harrah's, out on the bay, last time. I like that place. I hate hate hate the Taj poker room.. it feels like a dirty bus station. Definitely needs a refresh.
  • Trump Taj was next store.

This was the highlight of the TR for me.
  • Man, that bad beat sucks. Especially sucks when it happens from a douche.
