hand for analysis

i was playing a live SNG with 9 guys, 6 of whom id never played with...
they played a little weird, everyone got 50chips and blind were 1/2, and theyd raise it after 2 people were out, then after the next 2, then after each player... (1/2, 2/4, 3/6...etc)
i didnt know the host, but the 2 i knew i know as good solid players

anyways

blinds are 1/2 and i get dealt AK :diamond: in late position

UTG limps and EMP raises 4 to 6, 2 call, I call, and so does SB and UTG
3x raise and still 5 are in... whatever

flop comes 6 :club: a  10 :spade:

checked all the way to me and decide to check

turn is k :spade:

i have top 2 pair -
SB (friend of mine) bets 10, and its folded to me.... i put him on a king or Ace-paint i think about coming over the top but decide to smooth call...

the river is 2

he bets 10 at me.... i expected him to check it, knowing i had a hand..... i had to call it

he turns over 6 :diamond: 6 :spade:

i lost over half my stack here, on a hand i think i shouldve gone bust on.... any way i couldve played it differently or is that just bad luck?

on a side note, i busted out 6th- my firneds finshed 2nd and 3rd, in the money
and these guys turned out to be the most annoying players ever.... one guy kept going all in until he finally got busted with a J6s
then the people who were out kept harrassing the guys in to hurry up the play and raise blinds etc.... bad experience, bad players
another question, should i go back? it seems like easy money but they annoy the heck out of me

  • Preflop, I think you could have raised again, represent a bigger pair and get the 66 to fold, but if he doesn't fold you still have a 1 in 2.1 shot to win. But that's in the past and w can't change that now, next stage. You probably did play well after this but, only if you truly smelled strength. But from what you said you didn't. I really don't like the check on the flop. You can't be afraid in Hold'em of someone out floping you on a AT6 flop when you have AK. You also have to protect that hand from possible gutshot draws like KQ or QJ because it's a multi-way pot too. You have no idea what your friend or anyone else has except from the info you gained preflop, so maybe, Tens or sixes are possible, maybe AT but you never found out the true strength of his hand preflop because you didn't re-raise with your BIG hand. I really, really don't like the call on the turn. I think betting should have occured somewhere on the flop at least. Just calling him and letting him see the next card for his price is not a good move especially since you thought he was weak but he could still have a draw. A lot of cards could come off that will kill you and you don't want to give a free draw. For example, a spade, a Q, J, maybe a T. It would have been hard to muck AK on the flop had you bet and been raised, but on the turn it might be easier as there are more hands that you could but him on but then again you do have Top two pair, it's such a tricky situation, but the only reason you got yourself into the this situation is because you didn't re-raise preflop.
  • thanks, great reply

thats what i thought my biggest mistake was - not reraising preflop

and my intentions of checking the flop was to let someone hit
  • That's what you don't want there is someone catching to beat you though. At least make them pay to catch you. If you can win the pot there you are much better off because you can't lose anymore.
  • I personally just think that you got that Ace at the wrong time. LOL. Especially when that six came for your opponent. I would like to say that I would have played it differently... but Im not sure.

What I would have done instead of checking the flop though is bet out. You could probably have saved yourself some money at the end. What would have happened is some players would have folded and most likely the only man left in the pot would have been you and 6-6 guy. He probably would have reraised, and that is where you could have folded.

Other than doing that, not much you could have done differently.
