Etiquette question

Are there any etiquette principles one must know about when running a full board, or a turn and a river or a river only more than once? Who is it to suggest/request to run it a couple times?

You dig?

  • I don't see why you couldn't just ask your opponent if they are interested in doing that. I guess it would typically be a person calling an all-in that would propose that though. Not sure I get the question.
  • Well I'm wondering if you call the all in but you're in bad shape, is it kosher to suggest running it a couple times? Is it kosher to refuse if you're in good shape? Is it ok to suggest it if you're the one who was called? Just wondering if there are any "unspoken rules" about this. I know some people never run it. I like to run it every time someone suggests it. For me it's kind of not cool to run it sometimes and not run it other times. But what do I know...

Just wondering what your thoughts were?

I'd treat this like chopping, you either do it or you don't.

If you want to run it twice when you are behind, you need to run it twice when you are ahead. I do think however it's ok to run turn/river twice but refuse to run the entire board twice as long as you are consistent.

As for suggesting it, any player in the hand should be able to suggest it. Though the games you play in may not allow it overall as a rule.
  • Running it twice is mostly a product of playing in huge games (meaning bigger than you are rolled for) where you want to reduce your variance.

You can propose it whenever you want but it is usually offered by the player who is ahead in the situation.
  • Theres no real etiquette to asking an opponent if theyd like to run it more then once. Its probably poor etiquette to ask in a small or medium stakes game because 99% of the poker population has never run it more then once and asking is just going to hold up the game for everybody else while you explain what running it more than once means and the purpose of doing. For example I got it in with QQ against some guys AK once and asked to run it twice and he responded "Why would I want to run it twice and put double the money in when you have a 4% edge?" He honestly believed I was trying to con him into putting extra money in.

Now if you happen to be playing in a big game...the purpose of running it more then once is to reduce variance but usually only in situations where the hand values are fairly close otherwise it just becomes a waste of time.

For example...suppose a guy has a one outer...sure you can reduce the variance by running it 5 times, but it takes time and if the guy does peel the one card he needs it forces the dealer to break the stacks into 5ths.

Running it more then once is really intended for 60/40s or coin flip situations where people arent happy putting that much money on the line for a single flip. It also helps keep the game going because live isnt like online where you have easy access to reload funds. Theres no point busting out a player in a game with no list on a coin flip if it kills the game.

Another variation of asking to running it more then once is to just ask the guy to take some money back in clear variance situations. For example last year at WSOP, I got it in for 300BBs in a big game with AK diamonds against a guy with AK spades. I asked if he just wanted to chop it there and take the money back. Clearly I have no edge here and he has no edge...it makes no sense to run the board to bust one of us because its just a pure variance play.
  • Kai, was that in a casino dealt game? Now I have only ever played 1/2 but any time some guy has asked the dealer has always said we don't do that. Is it at some particular buy in where it is done or is it by casino?
LOL, on a side note, I do remember once at MGM 1/2 a guy asking that and the other guy agreeing, but the dealer said no. As I recall they were both quite upset.

At WSOP last year you could run it more then once...as many times as you like actually... if you were playing 5/10 and up i think. Usually just in timed games...the casino has an interest in not wasting time to get more raked hands in. But in the big games where your just paying time...its your time...their stance is that you can do what you want with it.
  • Thanks, get it... I can understand at a timed game, but don't the other players object? Since it's their payed for time as well...

well it depends. if it was a small pot, probably. but since usually these things only come up in mammoth pots the other players are pretty understanding since theyve all been there before and nobody wants to get involved with so much of other peoples money is at stake and your really only giving up a percentage of your 10-20 dollars of rake time.
  • Hmm...so I shouldn't ask to run 3x in our .10-.20 home game? lol

Now i am going to do it just for fun..
  • Thanks folks!
