Rounders:High Definition Blue ray.

I watched rounders in high definition blue ray for the first time.
I didn't expect high definition would make a big difference vs reg dvd...
But seeing it in HD for the first time I saw a whole lot more things that I didn't see on the DVD.

It's a much better film in high def... it surprised the hell out of me.

If you're a big fan of the film I recommend seeing it in Blue ray.

  • When did they release it on blu-ray? I've been stuck with a fair to crappy version on dvd that I found in some bargain bin at Blockbuster. Glad to hear that the blu-ray version makes it better as I have seen a definite difference in the animated films we've picked up.
  • What kind of additional things did you see?

Do you get to see Teddy KGB's hand near the end of the movie? ;)
  • Love that movie! Never eat Oreos while playing cards!

It taught me to never eat or drink while playing live games. Often the host of the game would order pizza for everyone. I would make most of my money during this time period as most people would be more concerned with eating than playing. Also they would only play premium hands(ace 10 or better) so it was easier to know where I stood.

Next time you play, order pizza for everyone. It might cost you $20-$30, but you can easily make $200-$300 while they eat!

If you listen to the commentary track with the director, writers and Edward Norton, they state that they love how much everyone has talked about what hand Teddy had. They also said they will never, ever tell what hand he had.

On a side note, the second commentary track with Chan, Hellmuth, Moneymaker and Ferguson is awesome. They only talk during the poker parts and are completely silent throughout the rest of the movie with one notable exception. When Mike and Worm are in the gym and Mike comments about how he spent a year up there running from Tommy Manceeny (or something like that), Worm asks what he ever did to deserve that, prompting Mike's famous reply: you fucked his mother. All four of them just burst into laughter, then dead silence about 10 seconds later. Awesome stuff.

You must be playing some pretty high stakes to steal $200-$300 in blinds in the 15 minutes a pizza lasts at a game.
  • i actually watched rounders the other day for probably the 15th time its amazing how you pick up new things every time. on this particular viewing, i was paying close attention to the first time KGB and Mike play for the first time. Teddy turns over his aces full and walks away from the table...the whole time im thinking "SIT DOWN Teddy, your opening yourself up for the quad 8s slowroll!"

I was just watching it again today (sadly on DVD; have yet to find the blu-ray) and noticed something I thought was odd. Aren't they playing heads up wrong? When they deal the first hand, Mike gets KK and is in the sb, but he is acting first preflop when Teddy is the dealer? Isn't the dealer supposed to be sb and act first preflop and then last from the flop forward?
  • The hand is about 3:30 into this clip.

    YouTube - Rounders (11/12)

    I think you're right.
  • It happens again during the last hand.

I also forgot how great John Malkovich is in this movie.
  • I loved listening to the writer/director/Edward Norton commentary where they explain that Malcovich didn't know how to speak with a Russian accent, so he asked his neighbour, who was Russian, to speak the lines into a recorder so he could work from that. Only one problem: his neighbour was a woman and that apparently makes the accent different.
  • [Man Narrating] Listen, here's the thing.
If you can't spot the sucker in your first half hour at the table,
    then you are the sucker.
Guys around here'll tell ya... you play for a living.
It's like any other job. You don't gamble. You grind it out.
Your goal is to win one big bet an hour, that's it.
Get your money in when you have the best of it, and protect it when you don't.
    Don't give anything away.
That's how I've paid my way through half of law school.
    A true grinder.
See, I learned how to win a little at a time. But finally, I've learned this...
If you're too careful, your whole life can become a fuckin' grind.
  • There was supposed to be a Big Blu-ray release of Rounders with alternate ending and all kinds of neat stuff but Disney canned it till next year.

I bought the blu-ray Canadian version of Rounders cause I could not wait.

There are no special features or alternate audio on the blu-ray. It is only the movie very meat and potatoes.
