Building a Bankroll Online Advice

Ok here is the question. I have a friend who has played alot in live action. Casino action in BC. He just moved from BC to Brandon last week. We here in Brandon, Mantioba dont have a casino and the closest is 2 hours away in Winnipeg to play low limit holdem. He has played online before, however has since withdrawn all his money. He now looks to put some money online and build up a bankroll. What are all of your suggestions on how to do this?

What games to play? (Sit N Go's, Limit Tables, NL Tables)

What bankroll to have? (How much of a bankroll should be have, for example 200/Big Blind for limit? Or how much should he have for NL, or for entries into Sit N Go's)

I would be interested getting all of your opinions on this subject, thanks.
:)

  • I'm trying a two pronged approach to building a bankroll online. As a general rule, I find limit games the easiest way to build a role, though I think there are other who would disagree

    1) I have a dedicated amount of money on Party Poker for ring games as I find them soft. Whenever I reach 150 x the BB I try and move up in limit. (ie. move to 1/2 at $150, 2/4 at $300, etc. If I fall to 100 x the BB on a level, I go back. Also, at this site, whever I double my money, I withdraw 1/4 of it and attempt to double the remaining balance and repeat. (It's important to occationally pay yourself!!)

    2) Bonus whoring! A new thing I'm trying is to have a set amount set aside for bonuses. Looks for new player and re-fill bonuses and go to town. You usually must gain Player Points equal to N x your desposit and different sites have different levels of difficulty in getting points. Two things to look for to determine difficulty; points needed vs. points awarded (I find 7 x the bonus coupled with 1 point per .50 rake a doable norm) and # of players playing on a site.

Whenever I can't find a bonus, I go back to Party and grind it out at the ring games. This does get boring at times, so I make sure to put some money into PokerStars for their MTT's and STT's, for whenever I need a change of pace.

For my personal bankroll build, my bonus whoring is just starting out, so the amount I have is a little low at the moment (and I almost lost it all at my first site). And, in Party Poker, I've been falling into the cycle of > play 1/2 > bankroll grows to $300 > play at 2/4 > bankroll shrinks to $200.

1/2 and 2/4 isn't that much different, so I'm waiting for the varience monkey to boost me up a bit so I can handle the swings a little better and stay at 2/4 for a longer period of time.
  • Thanks for the post Zithal. I was wondering, I always play on Ultimatebet, do you think that Party Poker ring games are softer and easier to win at? If so then I should just go over there and start killing them.

    YES!!!
  • Hehe, thanks Hork42... you were pretty adament about that reply. Is there that much of a difference in skill level between UB and Party?

WOW, maybe I should have been playing on Party Poker from the beginning.

And by the way, have you ever tried to cash out with Party? And if yes, did you actually get the cash out without any problems?
  • In my experience, Party has one of the quickest cashouts to Neteller...Usually same day.

I haven't played much at Party lately, my favourite games are at UB, plus I'm usually bonus-whoring at other sites. But when I don't have a bonus to release (which is rare nowadays), I try to log some time at the Party skins.

I've only played up to 2/4 there, but at those limits, they are pretty soft. Especially compared to UB or Stars.

The Crypto Network (Interpoker, William Hill, Caribbean Sun) has good monthly bonuses that are pretty easy to release. Plus some pretty soft games at 1/2. They might be a decent place for your friend to start. Although if they are just starting out online, you can't go wrong with the Party/Empire bonuses (and make sure to get the referral dollars! )
  • Thanks for the information Hork... I am going to refer my friend too Party Poker and I will probably go over there myself. Heck... soft games mean easy money for myself. :-)
  • if you're looking at loose ring games i swear by pacific poker ... but the interface is crap, the servers keep disconnecting and you can only play one table ... but the games are real loose all the way up to 10/20.

I've seen tighter 0.10/0.20 games on pokerstars than the any game on this site
  • i play the 3table tourneys at party poker and have made a killing...
top 5 spots pay, and im averaging 8th place...

sounds bad? im up US$834.00 after 18 tourneys

  • Chugs is completely correct about Pacific poker. I am not a huge limit fan, but I signed up at Pacific as part of a promotion (to get WPT 1 season DVDs).

Most tables have a 50-80% see flop figure, and it is extremely rare that I don't have 1-2 callers all the way when I bet.

You have to be prepared for your AA and KK hands to be cracked by random hands staying in the pot even on a dud flop like 4c 7 c calling a flop bet with a flop of Qc 10h 2s and getting runner runner club, however your good hands will be paid out very well. I would not recommend bluffing that much on that site ;)

I am generally a NL or sit and go or tournament player but I do play a few hours of limit there a week and I am up about 300 dollars playing 1/2 and 2/4 there over the past 2 months, and I play a pretty straight forward game there given people will always call.

    Good luck.
  • Are you saying that "solid play" along the lines of Hellmuth's top10 strategy for ring games and/or top 15-20 for tournaments is the way to go? I have found that solid play with a bit of creativity is necessary at UB...and I'm not all that creative yet.

    Thanks for your input...great thread!
