Poker Chip Stacks

I have a question about how you guys stack your chips. I often find myself stacking chips in bunches but I have trouble keeping track of how much is in each stack.

How do you stack your chips if you have say, 25, 50, 100 and 500 coloured chips and start out with 2500?

I generally start out as below, but then seem to lose track of how to keep them organized.

25 in 2 stacks of 200 = 400 chips
50 in 2 stacks of 400 = 800 chips
100 in 1 stack of 500 = 500 (3 x 100 chips left dangling somewhere)
500 in 1 stack of 500 = 500

Any suggestions or tips? Should you try to keep things simple by say, stacking everything in groups of 500?

Thanks,
Rubens

  • I guess this could turn into a "superstitous" type thing, but for me..regardless of denomination, i always have them in stacks of 20 chips (all the same denomination per stack). Now for the wierd part, i situate them on the table in a "rack" formation, like in pool. Smallest denomination at the front working row by row to the largest at the back. When the stack goes up, i work towards the 2nd level, similar to the bottom but off set, creating a pyramid. I know, strange, but, it's what i do.
  • In most "major" tournaments, as a standard your supposed to keep your chips in neat 20 stacks for quick all-in counts with big denominations in front or on top with small denominations on the bottom or behind. I just use this as this is the convention most people are comfortable with.
  • Forget stacks of 500, use stacks of 11200
  • I never have enough chips to stack........ :(

I've seen this before and I said to myself when I get enough chips I would do this. It's probably the nicest looking chips tack I have seen. My only concern is that as you build the pyramid out it gives you limited room to shuffle.

Interesting. Ok, a couple of questions.

What would you suggest then for when the tournament just begins or in a small home game (less than 20 people)? Your not starting out with a lot of chips making stacks of 20 look a little off.

I've always kept my small chip sizes out and most visible, generally because early on your not necessarily betting with the larger chips as much. In a nutshell, whatever chips I am going to bet most often with will be the most conveniently accessible for me. Does that make sense?

A general tournament rule is that the larger denomination chips be out front and visible to the other players.

Ok cool, thanks for the tip.

lol I do the exact same thing....weird
  • I like when someone at my table begins to recreate the eiffel tower with their stacks...they won't color up...just keep collecting the small ones and keeping them in a single stack. One guy at my table had to have about 100-120 chips in a single stack. he was always careful how he moved his arms around it. And no matter how hard i tried to keep bumping the table with my knees, i just couldn't get it topple. Which is what i try to do when i see someone going for the ceiling with their stack. LMAO

LMAO, that's absolutely hilarious! I'd do the same thing, a little nudge under the table to watch that bad boy fall!

    :)
  • I stack 'em like this:

So awesome.........that stack looks so nice I want to eat it! Some day, I will own Paulsons.
  • I NEVER get tired of that pic, moose.
  • I build pyramids of stacks of 20.

When people ask what I do for a living I say, "I build pyramids."
  • That is a wicked stack there moose. Now how long did that take to create?
  • Probably an hour. That was only 600 chips. I'll have to build some bigger ones someday.
  • Collecting and counting how many chips i got in my possession. It won't be as color co-ordinated as yours moose, but i think it looks awesome so i gotta go for it...lol
  • Moose, nice rack...ahem, I mean nice stack.
  • That wasn't so hard LOL, but dam near knocked it over when i hit the table. Now if only i knew how to paste a pic in here. Only had about 480 chips.
  • Upload it to your photo gallery. Click on User CP then Pictures & Albums.
  • Thanks moose, ok i uploaded it. Not sure where you can find it on here, but i loaded it to an album as you described.
  • right click - copy image - start post - click on Insert Image button - ctrl c

Thanks for the pic post lesson moose, much appreciated. As i said, not as nicely colored as yours, but its all i had. LOL

Well folks, I tried the pyramid and it worked out quite nicely. I learned a lesson though. Really keep track of how much you have because I had a pretty big stack and when I went all-in, I wasn't sure exactly what I had when asking for a count.

    :)

So, is it as simple as a three chip base rotating around the centre axis?
  • Yeah that's a 3 chipper, mine is 5 chips around a center chip, then I finished it off on top with a 3 chipper.
  • mine was actually done with 4, white, red, blue & green. And it wasn't the most stablest as it got higher. I'm thinking your 5 or even a 6 would be nice and sturdy and go alot higher.
Whats next on the agenda...the golden gate bridge in pokerchips perhaps. Now that could be a fun one to experiment with. LOL Wonder where a good place would be to buy 10-20,000 pokerchips to begin the architectural pokerchip 7 wonders of the world exhibit. LOL

    FYP.

That would be moose's garage. He has them stored in there so the wife won't kill him. Every weekend in the summer, while the neighbours are mowing the lawn, moose is in the garage playing with his chips. He will eventually be written up in one of those "odd news" stories on Yahoo. Sort of like the guy who died beneath his collapsed mountain of old newspapers.
  • Stacking chips is over-rated...at least for me as I usually bust before I can get a nice art piece going with them.

But this year when I play the WSOP I plan to make it to the final table and I will build my chip design so it can be displayed on tv....

On a serious note if for some strange reason the planets do align and I get magically transported to the final table I will post here for design ideas and see if I can get them built before the final table starts....
