Bad Beat Jackpot--- Player out for smoke

I just wanted to know your opinions on this situation. On boxing day I was at Cascades Casino in Langley BC. The BBJ was at 92k. Of course it went off. 2 tables going and I have to be at the wrong one! LOL

Anyway, just before the cards were in the air, 1 player decided he needed a smoke break. Well of course that was the BB hand. Half of the remaining players decided to give him some cash anyway, while a few refused.

I personally would have given him some because if he was in the hand the cards would have been different and it wouldn't have happened.

What would you do?

There should be some posted house rules.
  • Has he posted a blind or anything, or requested that they post his blinds until he returns?

When you win a pot do you give money to people who are on smoke breaks because if they were in the hand the cards would be different?

When you don't win the bad beat jackpot do you expect people on smoke breaks to give you money because if they were in the hand the cards would be different?

    I despise bad beat jackpots.
If you play regularly bad beat jackpots cost you $5000 a year.
The last thing good players need is more variance that takes hundreds of thousands of dollars out of the poker economy.
  • bunch of cheap bastards! of course I given him a cut. Not because the cards would be different, just because he was at the table and why should he be penalized because he went to the washroom, for a smoke, etc. This is the house rule, doesn't have to be the rule of the table; seems like common courteousy. Of course, its all relative to the size of my share. If its more than a couple thousand, I would share it.
  • If dude was paid up on his blinds, then he should have got a table share. If he walked out on his BB, then too bad.
  • Although I agree with not giving cash to someone who went for a smoke if I win a big pot I don't agree that for the BB hand, everyone shouldn't throw him some cash.

To answer a couple other questions, the guy had been playing at this table for hours and you cannot have your blinds posted and dealt in while you are away. In fact, if that were the case, he would've gotten a table share for being in the hand and cards would not change at all. The only house rule there is if you're not in the hand, you don't get a share.

Agree also that BB jackpots cost money and create extra variance but unfortunately all tables here are bad beat tables

    One word, Karma.
  • Tough call. Depends on the mood of the table and how drunk I am.

He caused the bad beat to hit, though if he was there the bad beat wouldn't have hit. Where;s Freud?

My take is that he deserves nothing. His leaving the table on his own will for a smoke (which I do regularly), is his own goddamn doing. Sorry bro.

He has no claim to anything as the hand would have been 100% different if the smoker was still playing. As the Winner of the bad beat I might throw him a few hundred bones to keep him at the table, lol.
  • The casino should have a rule for this and from what I gather it seems like the casino ruled that he should not get anything. If that is the case then the other players SHOULD NOT give him anything just to "be nice".

If it were me, I would not expect anyone to give me anything, so why would I give to someone else. If I need to go for a smoke, then I will live with the consequences of my actions. This must have crossed his mind before he left.

Me too, us damn smokers. I realize and agree that he has no claim and technically deserves nothing but I just wanted opinions on what fellow forumers would do. Personally i throw him some cash.

I'm totally in agreement with the Karma comment too

100% agree. I would personally feel absolutely terrible if I went to take a piss and came back only to find I had just missed out on the BBJ, which is obvious a VERY rare occurrence. I would definitely give him a cut of the prize.
And I also can't help but factor in the truth that if he was at the table, different hands would have been dealt and the BBJ would most likely have never occurred.
  • While I avoid playing in a table with a *&^%$#@! jackpot rake, :bs: if it happened to me in Las Vegas during one of the +EV promotional periods, I would give money to the dealer like pokrgod instead of the absent smokers. What jackpot grinders sometimes do is get everybody to agree that whoever is away from the table still gets a share of the jackpot. Unless the SOL player is a friend, as soon as I tip the dealer, I will quickly hail a limousine to go to the Chicken Ranch! ;)

The best part is when one of the winners says "huh? I don't understand what you mean."

And this discussion reminds me of caribbean poker. Dude hits 100K and the other 6 players wait an hour and half just to get a cut. Would YOU hand them cash?
  • Pokrgod, I play at Cascades as well, not very often, but time to time.

Once I was on the waiting list for a table there (the old poker room, before the reno) and the table I was waiting for hit a bad beat. I was playing blackjack at the time, and the raucous roar was heard throughout the place. It was pretty cool though.

Eww... I checked their website to find out what Chicken Ranch was... there have to be better brothels than that. The girls were pretty brutal IMO. Wouldn't Bunny Ranch be better?

Actually yes, I've won a Carribean Stud Royal Flush progressive and gave the other players money for the wait :)
