Calling a raise with AXs

Title says it all.

I wanted to know what people's view is on cold calling a raise with Ax suited. Primarily in a limit game.

How do you play it if you have a draw, if you hit an ace, you miss it entirely.

Or do you not call peoples raises with AXs (not talking about AK or AQ [unless you don't call raises with those either])

Just find this to always be a tough decision for me

  • Ax suited i would see if the player that raised it is a tight player or not ... if his a lose player i would call it if it's a tight i would most likely fold :)
if i call and miss the flop ... if he bet i would fold if he checks i will make it another and see what he does (if he miss the flop most likely he would fold... if he calls he either flop the board or has pp)
wit AK or AQ i would make it another bet ... making ppl the players that play suited connector and high card wit rag fold(this also gives u information if they have pp or hit something on the flop after the flop... u will also kno that he has high card instead of high + rag ... so if small cards comes on the flop u won't have to worry about them pairing board and u prob have the best hand other then he having pp)

p.s. hope that made sense ... someone please give comment on what i wrote too :)
  • There are lots of variables here:
    * how many are in/likely to be in
    * what are the chances of a re-raise behind you
    * what range of hands does this guy usually raise with

I believe the chances of getting 3 of your suit out of 5 board cards are 6% (I think I read that somewhere...). If you do hit, you'll have the nut flush but you could still be beaten by a straight flush (unlikely) or full house. So I wouldn't call unless there were a bunch of people in, guaranteeing me I'd get paid off if I hit it.

If I completely miss the flop, it mostly looks like garbage and is checked around to me, I'll bet it out. If I get raised, I'd likely drop it.

If I have a draw off the flop, I'll bet/raise it.

If I hit an ace on the flop but none of my suit, that's a tricky one. I could have the best hand! The chances drop as the number of players increases. I'd likely either check/call or check/fold on the flop. Now, if I hit an ace and a couple of my suit, I'm off to the races!!!

    What are other people's thoughts?
  • I don't want to get into a raised pot with a dominated hand. You hit your Ace and what do you do? The initial raiser could likely have Ace-Broadway making your kicker no good.

If you decide to come in and if you don't hit a flush draw or two pair, you're in trouble. Chances of flopping a flush draw is ~11%. I'd wait for a better opportunity to get my money in.

(An exception may be in a very loose passive game, in late position behind many callers. But the situation would have to be near perfect...)

I'll usually call with ATs or higher - anything lower is an easy fold.

    hork.
  • The only time that I would play Ax suited... and believe me it is hard for me to lay down sometimes. Is like the others have been saying. If I could limp in before the flop... great! If I hit a flush or flush draw... heck I have a nut flush draw and yes I will try and hit it too the turn... maybe not the river, but turn. It all depends on all the hand if playing out at that particular time.

If I am playing against a known tight player, and I have my nut flush draw. And I bet, he raises. I might think twice about calling once, or twice. Limit games I might call, NL games I wouldnt just because I could get into all that much more trouble.

It really depends on the situation, the players that you are playing against, and the feel of that particular hand.
