Omaha Question

So here is the question. I have heard from various resources that Omaha, once learnt properly... can be easier to acheive winning results. Why? I am not sure. I have heard a couple pro's say this. I have also heard others say that Omaha is a more skillfull game than Texas Holdem is... was just wondering on some opinions here. Scotty and all_aces, Dave Scharf I would appreciate responses on this subject from you guys especially.

  • Hey Dennis,
First, let me confess that I am an omaholic. I think that the Omaha games (both hi and hi/lo) are fertile ground for winning results. With all the emphasis on hold'em, there seem to be a lot of people out there playing Omaha with a less than stellar skill set. I think we can debate for a long time whether hold'em or omaha takes more skill. But the skill set in Omaha is different than in hold'em.

Omaha is a game of outs. Because each player has 4 cards and six possible hand combinations, it is not unusual to see a nut hand win. And because you have 4 cards, you see an even higher percentage of all your cards on the flop in omaha than you do in hold'em. If you don't have a draw to the nut hand on the flop, sticking around for more cards is costly. Top pair, two pair and even bottom set on the flop is nothing to write home about. A paired board is almost an automatic fold for a straight or flush draw. Exploiting positional advantage or bluffing, while still possible, are far less useful in omaha than in hold'em. A little discipline on starting hand selection and flop play go a long way. And there appears to be a lot of money to be made off those who stick around with third rate hands and second rate draws.

While people often comment on the tempting fish count in hold'em, I have to say there is plenty of aquatic life at the omaha tables.

  • Thanks for the reply Amy... just to get this out of the way, are you the same Amy C that writes for CPP? Just wondering.

Anyways... the reason I ask this Omaha question is that last night I was playing Holdem. Started getting sucked out on by river miracle draws and things that "just shouldnt happen" lol. So I switched too Pot Limit Omaha, $2/$4 Blinds. I was playing patiently there, playing my nut flush draws... playing skillfully as usual. It just seems like when I did have the best of it, and I got payed off... I got payed off HUGE. I would raise the pot limit and most of the time it was for around $20-$50 and there was usually someone calling. I never got this happening in NL Holdem tables. I am really starting to like Omaha... REALLY!
  • Hey Dennis,

Yes, I am Amy Calistri aka the "oil doe" that writes for CPP. And congratulations on proving a little patience goes a long way at the omaha tables. I think my favorite is when people raise or re-raise me when I'm holding the nuts. It just doesn't get much better than that.

    Continued good luck out there,
    Amy
  • Thanks for the continued good luck Amy.

Yeah Omaha was impressive to me last night. Its not like I wont ever play Holdem again, because I will. I am a big fan of limit holdem cash games. And in fact I am playing that right now. :) Its just that Omaha was refreshing last night after taking a bit of a swing at the Holdem tables.

Hey by the way, do you play at all online and if you do what are your usernames? I play at Ultimatebet... I like the site, I like the pros that endorse it... and heck its the only site that I can post money too in order to play. So yes, they get my buisiness. LOL! Looking forward too your response, Dennis.
