casino owned players

I was playing at a small poker room in Vegas and ran into a situation that was odd. A player seemed to be under control of the dealers. He was also the guy who straddled every hand and kept begging everyone else too. So do these casinos compensate people to play there and inflate the pots?

  • Some may employ prop palyers.
They play with their own money usually and get to keep a portion of the rake they generate..hence the pot building
  • I propped for a club in Mississauga for about 6 months before it was "closed".

I played my own money but was paid an hourly rate.

Not sure how casinos work, I would guess relatively the same.
  • They use props to keep a table open or start a new table rather than shut it down and earn no rake.

As a live prop would you have to leave if the table was almost full? I believe that is what online props have to do.

If there was a wait list, yes. I would open the new table.
  • So I guess this is a well known thing then. I was just a bit surprised when it clicked. I called him out on it right at the table then left lol.
  • Yep...it's less common now but it does exist.
  • Sounds like a great job!

    Tell us more about it?

I guess you have to get good playing shorthanded?

I don't see how they could sustain losing.

Most of the props I saw, sat around all day reading magazines then for an orbit and a half or a couple orbits they would jump in a table that was in danger of collapsing. As soon as it got back up to 7 handed or so they would immediately leave. Real steady source of income.

    This.

At clubs, they basically pay regulars insignificant monies to not leave before a certain time. Not bad if you werent planning on leaving anyway.
  • It's not a well-known thing, and there can be abuse if you don't know who and what the props are allowed to do. In Nevada, you have the right to know if there are props in the game, and I asked at Binion's when it was a short-handed game.

Online, many players were hired by PokerStars and other sites to be props.

  • So can you ask this at ANY casino? and if you can...do they HAVE to tell you if there is? is this just a vegas type thing, or does Rama and Niagara do this as well?
I'm just wondering cause i have played at Rama quite a few times on short handed table (5-7) players and never thought about that before or noticed it.

As an ex-dealer at Casino Niagara, I've never been aware of having any prop players. November 07 was when I left there. Not sure if they're doing it now though.
