Poker's Popularity

Do you think that we'll see poker reach a level where it's a mainstream, popular sport like almost any other? The analogous sport in my mind is golf. In an ideal world, I could see poker getting that kind of coverage...what do you all think?

  • I think it will. With the WPT gaining huge notoriety on the travel channel as well as the poker tourny that played on Super Bowl Sunday, networks are finally starting to catch on that Poker means ratings.

I didn't hear about that...what tournament was on the telly that day?
  • It was the WPT Season 1 finale, the WPT appearing for the first time in the US on the networks (and in Canada at all).

  • I believe TV and the Internet will definately push it mainstream. The huge AD dollars behind it, will do the same thing they did for other 'sports' in the past. Poker just needed the right medium. Now that it's available on the Internet, "most" people won't have to face the fear of sitting in a room full of strangers. (loss is much easier to take alone, is my guess) I bet you (lol) those low dollar buy-ins are just raking in the money at the pay sites. I've seen some for $2, with unlimited re-buys. lol Everyone from grannies to kids are playing. It's like bingo stakes too, so it should draw in the masses if they keep marketing it correctly. Plus, look at porn or video lottery terminals. lol No one admits to watching porn, but it is a multi-billion dollar industry annually. Not too many will admit to frequently spending hours glued to a VLT machine with the hope of one big win. People like to keep their vices private. We'll see.
