saying "sorry" for winning

this is a concept in poker that I have never been able to understand.
Why do people say sorry for beating an opponent in a hand? Politeness would be my best guess. I have never been remorseful for taking a players chips from him, that's why we play isn't it?

I know the apology generally happens after a bad beat/suck out but that's poker, that's gambling. Sure I'd be baffled and disillusioned if my K-K got called and beat by a 9-2 but I think saying sorry to me afterwards would be even more upsetting lol

Do you ever say it to opponents? Are you really sorry?

  • If you were truly sorry, you wouldn't have played the hand and hoped to win. lol..I never say sorry. "Unlucky" sometimes...
  • I have to admit that I do this randomly. I will only apologize if it is someone I know/like. Strange, but I agree with you.

    I hate thinking . . .
  • I say sorry to bolster my image as the sweet shy woman that you don't want to play back against...

    ...does that count?
  • I will do it after a sick beat in a tourney where u bust another player... I only do it for karma as I think if you are thinking hahaha got your chips it will come back on you worse.
  • Everytime I hear or see someone say sorry (online or live) I say "give back the chips then"....that usually shuts them up really quick.
  • I resolve to laugh uproariously whenever I suck-out on someone, from now on. I will follow this with a very loud, "I know I'm a donkey, but you're still done." It's all part of my 7th level planning.
  • IF and when i do say sorry...its always followed by either "guess ya shouldn't have called that bet huh?" or "what the hell were YOU chasing?" all followed by a smile and a chuckle as i rake in their chips.
  • I used to say sorry all the time. Not anymore.
Even if I donkey them out. They are my chips to play with win or loose and if I win I win. It's not my fault that that person cant read me.
If I do say sorry which usually is not often , I do so in sarcasm and I say it with a smile just to piss them off more.
So never say sorry for your play. I don't expect anyone to say sorry to me and they usually don't.

    ummmmmmmmm...yea
  • Deuces and sixes are death AJ. No flush for you this week.
  • I do when I call when I put them player on something, but I misread and they got me dominated and I suck out on them. Cause you like to think that you were suppose to lose with that and that you can beat them by outplaying them and making all the right decisions.
  • Never say sorry.

    Just say "oops".

    It induces far more tilt.
  • I always found it interesting that after you take someone's entire stack, they want to shake your hand. I guess its better than being stabbed.
  • I say, "Sorry".

If they think I'm an idiot, that's a good thing.

  • Among the home game friends we use the term "poker sorry", which means basically....

I understand that was painful for you, but I pretty much don't give a fuck at the end of the day.

best posting so far! I just may adopt that for my shmucks.
  • I was playing a live NLHE tourney the other night and the table started talking about this. I never say it and hate when people say it to me.

Three and half orbits go by and I have cracked this same guy's aces twice, the second time knocking him out. (He put over 90% of his chips in behind, but whatever.)

Instead of saying "sorry", I said, "I'm sorry for all your poker buddies, they are going to have to hear about this for a long time."

(I always seem to crack people's aces, I posted a similar story in the BandM area from two weeks ago.) :D
  • Gotta agree, dinobot's takes the cake.

I find myself saying it when I give a horrific beat, probably because of the karma thing graham was talking about. But for those that don't believe in it, I can understand sorry coming off as very lame.
