  • OK, no offense to the soccer team, but...

Does anyone know how a company like this gets away with running these tournaments without a license??

One of the main problems that we have with tournament poker in Ontario is that the people that want to run tournaments with a good structure either have to do it for free or sneak around, while the people who run poker tournaments with bad structures (including the Casinos) are the ones who can freely advertise.

Did anyone else look at the structure for this event?? For $50 in chips you get 1500 in chips. The blinds then go 25/50 50/100 100/200 200/400 400/800 500/1000 (wow! a short break) 1000/2000 2000/4000 4000/8000 etc. For a company that claims they have the most experience in the area on running tournaments, they have the shittiest structure!

The add on has to happen BEFORE the tournament too... So you are almost forced to do the rebuys unless you want to waste the $20.

My favorite part is the fact that you don't have to even stay in to make the final table. Players get 3 tickets and they can win a draw to get to the final table, gaining the average in chips between 4th and 5th place (or, if they are still in the tourney they gain the amoung in chips equivalent to that).
  • Meh some of it is obviously the format of the fundraiser goal. The Orangeville guy runs similar events out this way. However winning a draw to the final table is totally stupid. Give the guy 5th place money ok but putting someone at the final table totally screws the players who legitimately got there. Dumbest idea ever, unless of course you are the organizer and wants to make sure everyone sticks around for the cash game in case they make final table. Certainly no conspiracy theories here.
  • As Moose says these are fundraisers, NOT poker tournaments per se. Some of us (real tournament players), of which I'm not one :)... obviously abhor these structures. Unless you really want to support whichever charity it is for, don't play these. In fact even if you do want to support the charity just send them the money. Playing these formats likely just screw up your game. I think it is impossible for a player to make money at these long term as you can't beat the rake consistantly enough to make them be +ev even with the numbers of inexperience players entered.
  • I dealt a tournament much like this one last year, where there was a raffle for a seat to the final table, and he would receive the average amount of chips on the table. The guy that won the raffle was sooooo loaded by the time the final table happened, he barely made it to his chair, and when he did, first thing he did was upset his stack all over the place.

Didn't understand why the organizers did it this way, other than the fact that they used the raffle proceeds towards the charity. Definitely wouldn't support this in any other kind of venue.
  • I agree with the comments others have posted. The structure is pretty bad, and with the way the blind goes and only 1500 starting chips you are forced to go all-in very soon.

I guess they used the blind structure used by online SNG games. There are just simply just too many re-buys and add-on.

I personally like freeze-out, so I can just focus on the game.
