Bankroll managment 101?

I havle little or no disipline and I feel the I'll go broke sooner or later if I keep having swings like mine, my bankroll right now is around 350$, pretty unimpressive. Since I'm trying to prepare for this one event in april by playing mostly mtt's, how should I go about increasing my bankroll?

    helpful.

I think the best way, besides improving your skills obviously, is to not play beyond your means. Don't risk too much of your bankroll at a time, so that you can handle the inevitable swings that come with poker. You need to be able to handle the variance so that you can be a winning player in the long run. There are a few different theories out their on how much of your roll to risk in any one session; and it varies depending on whether you are playing tournaments or cash games.

I try to play most MTTs, and I don't play one's with entrance fees greater than 2% of my bankroll. SO if I had a $350 bankroll, i'd be entering $5 - 7$ tournaments mostly. That way a horrible run, won't cripple you. That's just based on experience with having to endure some pretty bad runs from time to time. I'm sure some other people on here would have better advice on the matter.

If you don't get much response here, try posting in the "ask the poker pro" section.

lol. Better that than Bankrollus Vanishus. Or as the article calls it "Hombre Busto" :)
  • Its hard to give you advice on your bankroll based on your description of yourself, because increasing your bankroll and managing your bankroll are a function of the risk you are comfortable with and the gain you hope to make. You describe yourself as having $350, "little or no discipline" and that youll "go broke sooner or later". But your not telling us the important things like...

    1) "If I lose this 350 there wont be food on the table for my kids"

    OR

    2) "If I lose this 350 I go back to my Job as a plumber and put it back in a couple months of saving"

    OR

    3) "If I lose this 350 I pull it out of my spare change jar and put it back in my account after I finish taking this alley-oop from Kobe Bryant"

if its 1...you need to move down to the lowest possible stakes or perhaps quit entirely
if its 2... play whatever your comfortable with...id suggest if your an MTTer playing $10 buyins is probably about right if the money is replaceable with your job.
if its 3...hey, stop being such a nit and put more money in there and play some huge tournaments.
  • well, I'm a 20 year old university student so my bankroll is not my life luckily, I could replace the money pretty easily with some of the travel money I won but I'd rather not if I can help it :P I appriciate the responses and it looks like I'll be doing 5$ 27/45/180 man and the occasional 10$ 18/27 for a while =)

How come all the whitespace in posts get condesed???
  • Most people i know who play for fun, and already have a regular job, really don't consider bankroll management. They just go out and play with whatever they can afford to lose. Without leaving the cupboards bare LOL. But those that i know who play for a living, any of them that i have talked to have told me that the key to managing the bankroll is to set yourself limits. if you don't manage your loses correctly and keep a steady eye on it, the next thing you know your bankroll will have vanished.
If you have a $350 bankroll, and need it to last, i know if it was me, i wouldn't be buying in to $100 buy in tournament LOL. I might splurge and go for a $25 buy-in(once) but would probably keep it to around $5-$10.

Richard...you never did mention if your bankroll was strictly for tournaments, or if you use that as well to play cash games?

Yes, I would have to agree with that. As stated in The Mathematics of Poker, you are being overcautious spending far too much time playing at lower limits than is justified by your particular situation and foregoing large amounts of profit. Next time we carpool to Fallsview, we should skip 2/5 and mount an assault on the 5/10 table! :D
