1st let's go back to the peoples choice awards;

Niminations were;
Cold Play
One Republic ft Timbaland
Kid Rock

Kid Rock wins but how are the other 2 even considered rock

and now we come to the Grammys how the hell does Cold Play win Best Rock Album, they are no where close to being rock

  • I don't think it is dead, I think it is just changing/evolving. The problem is there are a lot of good bands that may or may not fit into a certain category because their style is so different, but they still believe they should be considered for awards. I guess ROCK was the best possible fit for coldplay in the Grammy's opinion.
  • No matter what you think of Coldplay, they are a ROCK band. Hard rock? No, but rock band still.

    Don't judge the fans of great music by a couple of out-of-touch award shows.

    Rock will never die! Fans will always fine ways to connect with the music they love, no matter which genre.
  • HEY !!! YOU THREE !!! GET OFF MY LAWN !!!

    And take those lawn chairs with you, dammit . . .
  • In all seriousness, I think "genres" are what is disappearing, albeit more slowly than the ice-cap. I had a discussion about movie remakes vs. cover music with a friend recently. Both of us agreed that the "remake" band is already here. Currently it's older acts with only one or two original members doing the casino circuit, but how long will it be until four different guys don the make-up and tour stadiums as KISS? Look at Queen with Paul Rodgers, Journey with that Qubecois kid, etc.

    A day will come very soon when Keith Richards will be proved correct. Everybody WILL have to pay $$$ to Chuck Berry. Or, at least, to his estate.

    So, is Rock dead? Nope. Just recycled . . . :D

    On a separate note....Rock is not dead. Lots of bands out there (and upcoming bands) that are amazing and do follow the "traditional" rock stereotype. Although anyone looking for the return of 80's hair bands may have to wait a bit.
  • If you look at the pop music award scene, you'd begin to wonder if Rock ever actually existed at all. They've never given credit to bands that weren't mega revenue generating cross-continent successes.

    Anyway, what you are seeing is the evolution of music as genre's breakdown over time. Why can't rock including synthesizers or an uptempo/dancy beat? Why can't hiphop include an electric guitar? Why can't a rapper front a rock band? At the end of the day there's no reason..

    I really wanted to say that genre's still exist.. but one look to wikipedia when they try to classify bands today is pathetic.. Electro-punk-funk.. Math Rock.. Post Rock Psychobilly... When a 'genre' includes like 6 bands, it's not a genre..

    Alternative metal - Baggy - Britpop - C86 - Christian alternative rock - College rock - Dream pop - Dunedin Sound - Geek rock - Gothic rock - Grebo - Grunge - Indie pop - Indie rock - Industrial rock - Jangle pop - Lo-fi - Madchester - Math rock - Noise pop - Noise rock - Paisley Underground - Post-grunge - Post-punk revival - Post-rock - Psychobilly - Riot Grrrl - Sadcore - Shoegazing - Slowcore - Space rock - Wicca

    Anyway, guitar diven rock will always be around.. On Q107 ;-)

    In seriousness, I listen to British Indie Rock and they're still mostly guitar rock + synth + alternative beats..

    Edit: I just wanted to add that everytime it seems like we're heading down the road of one unified genre, we get a band that does things completely different and the top level genres merge away from eachother.. only to contract until the next one over and over.

    ok, so awards shows... never mind rock, is it really even considered music?

    or just business?
  • I know there is lots of up and coming rock bands out there and lots of current ones. They just don't did the recognition they should.
    Not enough radio play for them at all, so basically Rock Is Not Dead it is just commercially dead
  • Well.. what do you mean by commercially dead? I hear lots of upcoming band songs included in advertisements today.. Radio? Well no one listens to that anymore anyway.
  • commercially dead meaning commercial radio

    put on the satellite radio station Octane, cause that is the only place you are going to hear new rock music that should be reconized but any rock station in this area will not play them.
  • Rock has been downhill since they put Chuck Berry into prison over a hooker.
  • Try Rise Against.
    Their last 2 albums rocked ... really good band and I'd consider it punk-rock ...

    anyway more rock than coldplay that's for sure and kid rock is.... ewww except for pole dancing.
