First non-poker purchase from bankroll

Ok, so after a entire year of bankroll building, I decided that it's time to spend some of it on something other than poker training, poker software, or poker books. And, since I've decided to part with some of my hard earned roll, I'd might as well invest it... kind of. I decided I'm going to buy my wife the new Blackberry Storm. She needs a new phone and I figure that when I tell her that I bought it with poker money, it should keep my poker sessions "sans grief" for a while.

Anyway, as I was thinking about this I thought this might make a good thread. So, what was your first non-poker purchase (with poker money) ?

And btw, if any of you have the Storm, let me know what you think of it.

  • Went to Cuba in '07 with the family. Poker did not pay for the trip, but it DID pay for my daughter to go swimming with some dolphins. Priceless gift for Dad, too, seeing her face afterwards . . .

Pix are on my profile page, I think.
  • Won the FT 30K last January.

Spent 2.5K on wicked 3 piece home gym.

    Have never used it.
  • all for the wife (I see a familiar trend starting):

    - diamond earrings (first decent online win $600US)
    - Movado watch (cruise winnings)

I guess any Vegas profits are already spoken for :(
  • Credit card debts ... god I'm boring
  • new computer, dishwasher, bed and baby carseat for my sister in law.

Lol, I think this is more common then some would think. I just bought mine some "random flowers", I made sure to make subtle reference to the fact that poker paid for those...

Also took her out for lunch yesterday and when the bill came I mentioned that poker has the bill this time...

    Love those "sans grief" periods.

Then in order over the last 3 years - leather couches, diamond earrings for the wife, Wii for the kid and finally GPS for the wife for Christmas. For myself I got roughly 6000 poker chips.

  • If she charges $200/hr and you finish in 5mins, can you only pay her $10?

    uhmmmm......no pun intended

Anyhow, my first purchase of a non-expiring device or service was a HP 17" laptop for $900.00...but was more of an investment for future losses....I mean winnings.
  • ...is this the start of a trend? 2nd non-poker purchase, again for the wife, is a highly overpriced Coach purse.

Should have got a knock off. ;)
  • Rolex was my first purchase got a nice submariner with a blue face. I hardly wear it though, just for special occasions or if my other watch battery dies.

Then 3 years ago I bought my 350Z with my entire bankroll. Let me just say that was the dumbest thing I could have done (if I had known what I know now speech). I look back and if I had kept the roll I would have probably been able to buy 4x350Z by now.

Ah well live and learn. For the most part I reccomend people to take 10% out of their winnings every session just so that you could pay yourself and look back at all the stuff you got through poker if the day ever comes you go busto.
  • Breakfast at McDonald's. I think I won $15.

First actual withdraw from my ps account paid for.... Lego for the wife. Damn, it really is how it works.
  • Third purchase from my poker bankroll ... and, it's for me this time.

    Attachment not found.

Ok, so poker didn't pay for all of it, but it did pay for the (All-In) 80K regular maintenance package. :)
  • Sweet I picked up a white one a couple months ago, sick car.

My first choice was white. Apparently, none left in Canada.

I'm a big fan of making small regular withdraws from my bankroll...

10% per session makes a lot of sense.

If you leave the money in, then your bankroll will rise much faster than your skill and you will be over-rolled for higher games before you are ready to play them.

    That said....

Most people have the opposite problem. The vast majority are way under-rolled for the game they are playing.
  • If you leave the money in, then your bankroll will rise much faster than your skill
So how can I get to this problem? :)
  • I respectfully but strongly disagree. As discussed in our poker bible, The Mathematics of Poker, if we take money above a certain amount out of our bankroll on a regular basis, our risk of ruin is 100%. This is why so many pros despite having had some huge scores eventually go broke at some point and have to borrow or beg to be staked just to be able to play the next tournament. Las Vegas is littered with broke pros and backers, especially after this year's devastating WSOP where there were multiple bracelet winners and so much of the money won was concentrated in relatively few hands such as Phil Ivey.

Ideally, a player will have another source of money so that he can put all the money won in poker back into his poker bankroll and let it grow without bound. That player's risk of ruin is negligible.
