Best SnG Book to Start With--Moshman or Shaw?

Hi Guys,

I play extremely low buy-in SnGs ($1s, sometimes $3s or $5 DoNs though my bankroll can't afford it). Over sixty or seventy games, I'm about break even. I'd like to pick up a book that focuses specifically on SnGs, as they're my game of choice.

Collin Moshman's Sit 'n Go Strategy seems to be regarded as the best. But I've also had Phil Shaw's Secrets of Sit'n'gos recommended to me, with one individual saying he'd recommend I read Shaw before I read Moshman.

While Moshman's book is undoubtedly more popular, those of you who have read or are familiar with Shaw, what is your opinion? I'm only going to get one book for now.

Thanks very much!

  • I think is less complicated

    Moshman is god in SnG

I would suggest even sining up for his vids...
I have a bonus if you pm me.

At $29us for a month of vids I think you will be better off
  • If you can't crush $1 sngs before Moshman, you need a basic poker book first. Moshman will apply better at the $10 level and up.

I have not read Shaw. Maybe it is more basic, which is why your friend recommended it first. I don't know.
  • Moose is spot on.

Read something like Harrington on Holdem I, II, III before you read Moshman.
  • I have Harrington on Hold'em already.

I've only played 76 SnGs, and that's spread out over the past year. This is when I began playing real money poker. I've only played in bursts when I've had the time. My ROI is around 17%, and my ITM is nearly 33%. I realize these numbers don't mean much considering the sample size, but hopefully you can use them to judge whether Moshman really is too advanced for me.

As SnGs are all I play for the most part, I really want some SnG-targeted strategy in book form. If you're saying Moshman's book is useless for microstakes, I'll buy that. But I just don't have the bankroll to be playing at a higher level right now.

I feel that I could improve my results if I moved my money to another site. PKR.com has very fast blind levels and I find it too difficult to multi-table considering that you can only have one game open at a time.
  • I can't pinpoint your problems but if you have Harrington, reread them and retake the quiz. The sng books aren't going to hurt you as long as you realize, expecting someone to be capable of folding at a $1 level is expecting too much.
