Need help - Math tutor

Is there anyone on here still that can help me get a better understanding of probability?

Perhaps a uw math person?

looking to learn in depth probablity; permutation, factorials, distribution etc

  • I have a Computer Science degree and I've worked for statistical software companies and worked on statistics software. (SPSS Minitab, BMDP, SAS)

But to cover the topics listed in your OP you only need grade 12 math.

Probably the best places to start for stats relevant to poker is to read, "Gambling Theory and Other Topics" followed by ,"The Mathematics of Poker".

Did you have any specific questions?
  • My wife's a math teacher and is currently teaching Data Management (the old Finite course) so I have access to all the texts.

If you have specific questions I can refresh myself and help you out. Send me a PM.
  • I just threw out my old high school stuff the other day. Finite was the only class where I completely destroyed! I don't really remember anything from it anymore
  • I am reading through math books now, and sometimes the examples can be ambigious; ie

explaining factorials - a the order of a deck would be 52!

then the factorial of 6 would be 6!

does this mean when you have 6 items the ordering permuations is 6!?

Things like that were I am becoming unclear on the concept
  • Imagine you take 6 cards.
And deal a card to each of them.

How many ways can you deal 6 cards to 6 people.

First person get a card... 6 different cards he can get.
second person can get on the the 5 remaining cards.
third person can get one of the 4 remaining cards.

    and so on.

So there's 6*5*4*3*2*1 different ways to deal.
    6!
  • I can also give you help in any explanations you need Tyson

Probability Statistics were my favorite when I was going through UW Math

  • if your willing to hire a tutor i know www.ihatemath.ca : tutoring in mathematics - math tutoring for students at University of Waterloo, in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada has a very good tutor, esp for statistics... and i feel bad for you..i hate the math program at uw forcing us to take stupid ass courses that we never need/use.... its so brutal... finishing up my last stat this term lol.. good luck sir.
  • Just like me, you may wish years later that you paid more attention at those courses! I was wondering why there seemed so much useless theory during university, but years later, I needed to re-learn what was taught in those courses in order to make money in the stock market, poker, self-employment, etc.
