What and where to buy poker chips?

I am interested in buying some poker chips. Would like to buy a set that offeres the best value for the money. Would prefer to buy from :canada: due to exchange (although it is getting better day by day) and shipping costs. Any suggestions on where, what and how many to buy?

  • There was a post on this not too long ago.

I bought my chip set at Costco. 500 11.5 gram dice chips in a aluminum case with a lock, 5 dice and two packs of playing cards.

Total price before tax $ 75.00.

I have heard that Walmart is also selling them by the 100.

  • I bought my 1000 piece set about a month ago from a guy in the GTA via ebay. The transaction was from the trunk of his car at a Mississauga gas station - saves on shipping. Also, another guy was there at the same time picking up his set.

If you're interested and in the GTA, I'll post his userid in the advertising section.

Frequently these transactions will save on taxes too.:D
  • The sets at Wal Mart are ok, better than the old bicycle plastic chips but they are still plastic. They are just thicker.
I am verrrrry interested in buying a good set so could you please post the mississauga guy's user ID.

    Thanks,

  • Hey BCC55, I posted in the advertising section for ya.
  • a buddy of mine i worked with recently bought a chip set for like $20 from Real Canadian Superstore.....

i havent seen the chips but they look decent, 11.5 g clay chips(200),2 decks of cards, dealer button, and a green felt cover.....(i dont know how good the felt cover is) havent had a chance to check it all out yet but for $20 im sure u cant go wrong :)

This sounds like one of the sets they are currently selling at Wal-Mart (for $20), and I once again have to raise doubt as to whether or not these are really 11.5g chips.

  • I doubt they are clay as well.
  • im just relaying what my buddy told me
still , for $20 it isnt going to hurt ya
  • They are plastic and i think someone on here weighed them and they were 7 or 8 grams.
    Not bad for $20 snaps....
But nobody is going to confuse your game with the Taj!!

    The felt is garbage though!
They also have 100 packs for $10.

  • These are probably very good chips for casual home games, and it's great to see this kind of product out there at a good price.

A lot of casino chips are not even as heavy as 11.5g, so it's sort of a funny to jump to the conclusion that any kind of higher quality than usual chip is 11.5g. ;)

In fact, many people even prefer 8 or 9 gram chips over 11.5g chips. IMO, the compostion (clay, plastic, composite) of the chips is quite important, possibly moreso than the weight. The best chips are ones that resist sticking together too much, while not flying apart when you are manoeuvring them in numbers. (The Ontario casino chips I've used tend to err on the sticky side, but are generally pretty good I think.)

  • Casino chips are often so dirty, they tend to stick together no matter what the composition is. =)

Glad they provide free wet naps to clean your hands...
  • Does chip weight really make that much difference? I noticed a couple of sets at the mall at the Calendar Club display. Some were 11g, others were 7 or 8, but I couldn't tell the difference by looking. And I find it hard to believe it would make that much difference anyway. I haven't played any home games yet either, so I can't speak from experience.
  • just wondering what mall?
I'm in Brampton too and would be interested in checking them out.

    Thanks,

  • talked to my buddy at work, he brought a few of the chips to work...... they are cheap (haha) lightweight and plastic, but for $20 i guess its ok and will do for any home game, nothing special though, imo

There is a big difference in weight from 11g to 8g per chip. Now, it's personal preference on which kind you like better. I like the 11g chip, but I wouldn't want to go any heavier. If you are holding a stack of 10 chips, the 11g stack would be 30g's heavier. To compare, that would be six quarters (5g each). It seems like such a small amount, but you can really tell the difference. I find it a lot easier to stack chips higher with the heavier chips as well, the lighter chips will fall over if the table is bumped etc.

Also, I've heard a lot of people say that they like the way the 11g chips sound when they touch each other.

    *shrug*
  • I heard that Winner's is carrying chips & tables at some stores in the GTA. I have no idea if there any good though.
  • I'll check them out this weekend.

As for Winners, i spoke to a manager there and he said they would have them but they were pricey.
He actually told me about the Costco chips which look like the best deal.

  • At the Winners store in College Park (Yonge Street and College), I noticed in the clearence section they had some poker chips for sale. They were not anything funtastic, but for a starter set they may do the job.

The first set was low and behold called a "Texas Holdem Poker Set". Came with two decks of cards and 50 chips I believe. I could not tell what kind of chips they were as they were inclosed within a box. White and Blue were the only colours. I believe it was in the area of $30.00. It didn't look all that apitizing.

They also had a carrousel wheel with poker chips as well. They looked to be the 8 gram Diamond chips. It came in a variety of colours, execept the box looked like it had tampered with and 2 rows in the carrousel had mysteriously disappeared. I could not find for it.

If you're looking for a cheap starter set, Winners may be the place to look, but it may be worth it to buy a higher quality set off eBay. Sure its costs a little more, but the old adage "You pay for what you get" still applies to many things.
  • bcc Go to bermin entertainment 5000 dufferin...... I bought my chips there and they are the quality of the set the New York poker gave away at the tourney. I think they sell them for 90 for 500 chips with aluminum case and 2 decks.
