Home Game (cash) rules

Hey all, I am thinking on starting a cash game weekly at home with some friends, but we are used to playing tournament style. Is there a list of cash game rules around that I can see/copy?

I am curious about min and max buyins, cashouts..etc..basic poker rules aren't an issue obviously.

I was thinking a .25/.50 game to get things rolling and see how much interest we can generate..so..would min buy in be 20x bb? max 200xbb? What are the rules to adding on? Min buy in I presume, and not while play is live..What about cashouts? Can someone just wait until they win a monster then cash out and leave? Is there a time frame they should state before the game? Or a 30 min warning?

Thanks for any help:D

  • Hi,

There is no universal set of home poker rules. I would recommend printing a copy of Robert's Rules of Poker. Most people agree that it is a good set of rules to follow if there ARE any disagreements on the rules.

What I give below is just my opinion. You will need to find what works best for your group of players.

20 BB is a good minimum. I think 100 or 150 BB is a good maximum, but once again you will have to measure how comfortable your players are, and what buy-ins they want to commit.
What are the rules to adding on Min buy in I presume, and not while play is live..??

Players should be able to top up to the maximum buy in any time they are not in a hand. And yes, definitely not when they have a live hand.
What about cashouts? Can someone just wait until they win a monster then cash out and leave?

The chips on the table represent that players' money. They should be able to cash it out at any time. The player should realize that there is a risk of other players not wanting to play with a "ratholer", but it is their perrogitive on when they want to leave.
Is there a time frame they should state before the game? Or a 30 min warning?

This is more of a courtesy thing, but I don't think it should ever be enforced.

Just my $0.02 - Take it or leave it.

    Thanks for any help:D[/QUOTE]
  • Thanks! Yeah, I have a home set of rules that we use (borrowed from Roberts)..but again, wasn't sure about the cashout/buyin policies.. But, what you said, makes good sense, so we will run with it and deal with any issues when/if they arise.
  • Yeah most people out of courtesy will give a 30 min warning as to when they have to leave or sometimes announce their last orbit but I prefer the 30 min warning and then when that time comes additionally announce last orbit. Of course when the game breaks, that is usually by mutual consent.

Other friendly home game rules: you don't have to post when you enter the game and usually no missed blinds penalties, though hopefully no-one would abuse that. If people miss a blind, usually they will sit out an entire orbit and post as normal.
  • make sure you don't allow players to remove chips from the table if they are still planning to play (i.e remove their profits); you will have to decide if you will allow them to give chips to another player at the table (if the player goes broke, etc.); at most home games, this seems to be ok, as long as the chips stay in play. at casinos, it is a no-no.
  • go to Homepokertourney.com
they have some great general home game rules/etiquette info.
  • Be sure to induce a live straddle!

Why not just bump up the limits?

Because then the straddle would be too expensive.....

    derrrrrrrrrr

    Mark
  • Also....VERY IMPORTANT!!!

Clearly work out your rules for re-straddle and re-re-straddle, etc (Does it go up 1bb each time or double) and whether the straddle ends at the button or keeps going around until some pussy wusses out. ;)

And don't allow any of this 'blind raise' nonsense...it MUST BE A LIVE STRADDLE!

It is perfectly fine to leave ANY time you want in a cash game. PERIOD...

Sure, you might feel retarded or embarrassed or guilty or ashamed or dumb or rude or selfish or pathetic or even deranged but no, by all means you are OK to cash out ANY time. :)
