    Crisis Line. Call it.

Seriously, hope things get better. They always do. In crisis comes opportunity.

  • Chin up Phil, it's always darkest before the dawn... You have your whole life ahead of you, lot's of time to recover. Vegas is not a place to go with nothing, you need money to make money there.. Evaluate your skills, ie do an inventory, decide what sort of things you like to work at, and go for it... It WILL work out. And take stpboy's advice if needed. He knows what he's talking about...
    We're with you, just ask...
  • Hey Phil,

You got this, hands down. You'll have a job by Monday if you start putting out resumés! *(Ps. there are lots of free services that will write and print your resumé for you, if it has been awhile...PM me if you need help to find one in your area)

This is only a temporary set back!

    best,
    Kristy

Giving out Kristy's # qualifies as a crisis line?

Seriously thought that's tough luck. To commiserate with you two days before my house purchase closed my boss fucking tells me he is not renewing my contract so I have no job in a city I am moving to in two days. Had to bail on purchasing the house for thousands in penalties and beg my landlord to let me stay otherwise I was out on the street myself, all within 24hrs. Crappiest day of my life became the best day of my life because I found my dream job in the paper that very same day. 6 months later I moved into a better house at a cheaper price. It will turn around. You never know where fate will take you.
  • Was not originally going to post in this because, well, I don't know you, you don't know me, etc. But, here goes some truth . . .
Started my dream career in '99, big wage increase over previous job, etc.
Fast tracked by new employer, promoted, complimants and recognition by vice president, and head of HR, asked about interest in taking over the facility in Alberta. I am the best thing since sliced bread.
Eight weeks after the transfer discussion I am fired, this is 10 weeks before Christmas, so it's a great time to be out of work.
One false start, but to keep this short, I found something in my field. It pays a bit less, but I've been here three years+ and I am immensely happier now than I was at my dream job, and I believe I am a better person now, too.

This situation is temporary, and will not last.
  • thanks guys, wow all my favs on here posted, milo, moose, compeause and thanks Kristy i will keep in mind, have a interview already to work at Future shop in the warehouse, only seasonal and like part time and prob only min wage but i guess some money is better then none.

the vegas thing is random thoughts about starting a new life somewhere, cause their won't be any here even if the economc situation improves.

Good luck Phil, keep the faith... And by the way the economic situation in Vegas is much worse than here...... lots of unemployed casino staff, etc..
I'm really curious to see how quiet it really is...
  • Sorry to hear Phil... Things will work out, just try to find something you are good at and think of a way you can use it to make money now. There is always something out there you can do to make money, some times you just gotta think really hard. Even if it means cutting grass, walking dogs or whatever, money is money. Hope things improve soon!
  • Good luck. Unfortunately, neither Las Vegas nor gambling are good options. As I told a friend who wanted to move to Las Vegas to try to become a poker pro, it is a very bad idea. As compuease mentioned, things have become worse there since the summer, with a lot of casino staff being laid off or cut from full-time status, e.g., Paris poker room has closed. The Las Vegas Strip casino gambling revenue is on track for its biggest annual decline on record. Even Las Vegas Sands Corp., owner of the Venetian and Palazzo, is on the verge of bankruptcy.

<sniff> You like me. You really, really, like me . . . <sniffle>

Seriously Phil, things will be okay. I felt like crap too, when I got let go. It had never happened to me before. I did not make use of any sort of support (friends, family, etc.). It took weeks before I even felt like getting out of bed. But I did, and you will too. Something will open up, just like it did for me. And who knows, you may find your life taking you down a new path, one that turns out to be more rewarding, if not monetarily then spiritually or emotionally. Either way, the road your on leads in one direction, and that is forward. Good luck, and don't forget to keep us posted . . .
  • lol, come on blondefish u got the good life:), ya another 6000 jobs are actually coming to vegas, but like 65000 are said to be applying, but might not have much of a choice soon.

    go go go:)
  • Tough break here Phil.
    Been there myself.
    Keep pounding the pavement.
Lots of places looking for seasonal help right now and it will at least hold you over.
  • Nothing like a good set back in life to make you prioritize Phil. Been there, done that..don't wish it upon anyone, but in saying that..it was the best thing that happened to me...good chance you will look back on it the same way.

Go West young man...work is abundant with stupid pay. I go visit my fiancee, and see help wanted stuff everywhere!! Tim Hortons, with a 3yr. contract, will pay 25 bucks an hour...I know guys with zero experience or education making 6 figures.
If I wasn't already self employed I would be gone up north.

Agreed, any paying job is good while you keep applying for your dream jobs. During my trip to Las Vegas last week, I fantasized about moving to Las Vegas and being able to support my family despite the high variance. One way I could do it is to somehow get a job in a casino, and play poker on my off-time, like some of the poker dealers do even in their own casino.

Unfortunately, casino and other jobs in Las Vegas continue to disappear. To give you a realistic first-hand view of what's happening there, as soon as I check in at the hotel and ask about the employees I met in the summer, the clerk told me that there had been a lot of layoffs. I go to the promoted cafe late at night, but it has been quietly closed down without proper notification. I go to the Flamingo dinner buffet and it has been closed down. I phone Harrah's and there is no live person and the automated system keeps hanging up on me. I go to the Riviera and get told that the dinner buffet has been closed down. The huge Echelon Place development has been suspended, and there seems to be a lot of unfinished construction along the Strip.

The poker dealers at Caesars Palace and other casinos were laid off. Except for the Venetian, the other poker rooms weren't busy and there was not even a single satellite held at Caesars Palace or Bellagio. Dealers haven't been able to find a full-time dealing job for a couple of years now, so they have to wait for temporary events like the WSOP or risk playing poker without the proper bankroll. Unless you have connections, it is very difficult to get a job in Las Vegas with so much supply.

Continuing on my tradition of having a blonde fish for my avatar, she is Amanda Leatherman, WPT live updates hostess (still no official TV hostess). My first question to a floor supervisor at the WPT NAPC last month was not about poker but, "Who's the chickeeeboooo?" :)
  • chickeeeeeeeeeeeboooooooooooo lol hehehehehe

if you ever think of doing the vegas thing if things improve let me know, along with the above post about going out west, there is nothing holding me here really, 2 payments left on a loan other then that i can join your family and be blondefish jr.:)

  • dam man!!!!!!!!! your not kidding, at least a dozen jobs i can go for out there and mostly way more pay then what i was getting in this hell hole city, wish i had family or knew someone out there as would still need like how many thousands to move

All you need is a chip and a chair..;)

(read: job and place to hang your hat and those can be found online)
  • There's always opportunities out there for a young guy with no ties holding him to a specific area.. if vancouver goes down the shitter, there will usually be opportunities elsewhere.. If Canada sucks, go to the states.. if the states suck, go to europe etc..
  • gosh i love my life just get a call for a higher paying job but they won't take in house training, certification for forklift, Don't have 200-500 bucks to get certified from a outside training place so there goes higher paying job out the window.

nothing works out for me, i just don't understand why i have sooooooooooooo much bad luck :(
  • Somebody had to certify those in-house trainers, right? Call the guy back. Maybe there's some wiggle room if you can prove that the trainers were using "XYZ"s training methods. As my Dad always says, you've already got "no" for an answer . . .
If not, you should be able to find a place that will do it (certification)for about a C-note. Not much improvement I realize, but better than what you quoted. You might even be able to swing a payment deal with them, too.

Options, Philli, always look at the options . . .
  • got a call back from a place that position was already filled, so hope i can get in toch with the guy tomorrow, not sure if the position came open again or what, just know they tried to call me, either that or another job i applied for today will do.:)
  • Fingers crossed, buddy. Better get it cuz my joints are killing me . . .

    Good Luck
  • lol thanks milo, also just been informed that there is a chance of 1 of my old jobs(which was the 2nd highest paid job i ever had) may want me back, will have to see if that goes anywhere, of course right now i will take it and have had thoughts of why did i ever leave, seems like in poker whatever i do is the wrong thing.

  • Not usually one to get too personal or serious about myself or internet acquaintences. But here goes:

When my wife was pregnant with our daughter we did the 16 wk. blood test and the initial results were not good. It was a choice between Downs Syndrome and Spina Bifida. My wife was devastated, as it took us forever just to get pregnant. We went for an amnio, to be certain, and she was inconsolable until we got the results (baby was fine), much like she was every time we had a false positive on the pregnancy tests before she conceived. Through it all my attitude was, and still is, the following:

Either it's good news, or it's bad news. There is no sense worrying needlessly about the bad until it is 100% what the news is. Likewise, rejoicing is pointless, too.

In your case, much like poker, I would suggest focussing on process instead of results. Keep getting that resume out there, keep gioing to the interviews, and take the results with as much equanimity as you can muster. Eventually, you will have cause to celebrate. It's tough to behave this way, and I still struggle from time to time, but it keeps you on an even keel during bad times.
