building a case to display my chips

I'm not collecting full sets of chips however I pick up a $5 chip whenever I visit a new casino or whenever a friend goes to Atlantic City or Vegas. I now have 16 or so chips (including a $1, $2.50, $5 chip from Brantford, how EXOTIC!!!) and would like to build a display case to showcase the chips and hang this showcase in my office.

Has anything like this been done before by anyone here? Has anyone seen another persons project?

I'm just looking for ideas of things that may have been done before and I know that some people here hang out on chip trading sites and was thinking that there may be plans floating around that I could follow. Any help would be appreciated.

  • That is not a bad case, I was thinking of more like a shelf based system where the chips are displayed on an angle but perhaps that way of doing things would allow better viewing from all angles.
  • THey do make this type of Chip display case already. It's acrylic and angled. I have one and it works pretty well. Check out chiptalk.net and they'll have pics if you search. At least it'll give you an idea how they work if you're going to make your own.
  • Here is what you do:

Go to Michael's. Buy 16x20 sheet of black foam mat. $1.20. Go to dollar store and buy two 8x10 frames. $2. Cut foam mat in half. Take a chip you don't care about, say a $1 Brantford chip and use exacto knife to cut circles out in foam mat. Insert chips you do like and place in frame. Total cost ~$3.20+tax. Can put about 10-12 chips per frame. I'll post pics later.

This looks like an excuse to make a jig!

OK, dumb question but where is the search feature on that site? I added my account (Zunni), but can't find the search anywhere.
  • I think he means these:

H&H Innovations: home of the Chip Tree poker chip display

I think there is a discount available through HPT.

Yep that's the one I have on the bottom right.
  • Lots of coupons for Michael's this week so I finally got around to doing some of my chip displays.

Small frame $1 - dollar store
Large Frames $2.99 - Liquidation World
    Borders $1.77 - Liquidation World
    Foam mats $1.20 - Michael's
Exacto knife $1 - Dollar store

Getting the chips out of the cabinet and out where everyone can admire them...priceless.

I'm going to do a few more over the next couple days.

  • Because Moose is my hero, I headed down to Micheal's to pick up some supplies.

I bought a shadow box, and some black paint (as I wasn't sure I would like the frame against the chips, opinions?)

I started the mounting last night and finished at work this morning (that's right ladies... ALL NIGHT!!)

    Anyway,

    $17.95 Shadow box
    $2.00 Black Paint (not used)
    $1.95 Brushes (not used)
    $2.95 Paint Sealer (not used)
    $0.00 Masking tape stolen from a co-worker
    Approx $25

(reflection is of my co-worker Sean.. lol)

I notice some of my chips are not 100% straight up and down and will fix that next time I open this case up. I also want to pick up a couple more decks to fill out the bottom. If I get enough decks, I might make a case of just decks.
  • have to get around to making a display case for my chips at some point. Any updates on these cases? any other good frame options these days? Thanks.
  • I also made mine out of a shadow box. since the box had fabric in it, I used Velcro to attach my chips. You can buy the Velcro at Micheals too. I forget the price tho Attachment not found.
  • Nice, what's the benefit of a shadow box?
  • Little deeper than your standard frame.
  • only thing missing is a nice center piece..not sure what might look nice? got a dealer button from the 2011 PCA, not sure if it will fit?

That would look good! The case would be deep enough, but the fabric will probably pull off the cardboard from the weight of the button. They have many sizes of the shadow box frames.
  • These are on sale at Michaels this week for $20 (download their 50% off coupon) Front of case opens and has grove in base to hold chips. Like this option better than a frame as you can easily open front of frame door (on hinge) to add/remove chips. Holds approximately 30 chips.

Added the Pokerstars Live card for a center piece.
  • see added photo of frame.
  • Thanks Jah.

I still owe you one of the Metro chips. Can you spot it? Any you haven't seen before?
  • I'm trying to upload a pic of my display. It is a golf ball display. The front window door opens so easily accessible as well as viewable. It holds about 90 chips. It was a gift so not certain the cost. The shelves were custom made so that chips fit in a slot. Pic coming.

Thanks I either bought the same one or a similar one. Says it's for coins, but will work perfectly for my chips and coin display

Yes, mine says its for coins. Glad I realized the front opened or I would have been there forever trying to get the coins level. For $20, its a good option. Be nice if they had a bigger version.

Flyerland.ca has the 50% coupon for Michaels. Not sure about all cities, try Richmond Hill if you can't find one locally.
  • picked up another display case this weekend at Michaels. Same one is on sale for 40% off plus there is a 25% off coupon at their website (you have to register). Worked out to $20.30 all in.
  • Got the only one they had in stock at my local Michaels.
  • Display cases 40% off this week + 15% off entire purchase online coupon, good today only = win
