Turningstone Superstack Series Nov 28 - Dec 7

If I didn't have my 2 exams on Dec 5/6, I would be there for the entire week. Since I won't be able to make it, I'm sure there is someone that would be able to benefit from this posting.

    Pretty darn nice tournaments......

They may even be better structures than Bristol... no where near the charm and ambiance though... :) We love ya Rob...
  • Thanks to compuease for the patience factor calculations. How did you calculate the Skill Levels to be greater than the maximum of 6?

Three percent of the prize pool is taken away from the players for tournament staff, so the real rakes are higher as I posted before. For example, for the $240 events, a total of $46 or 19.2% rake (200 * 3% + $30 entry fee + $10 dealer toke) does not go to the players. To compare, this Thursday's $200 tournament at Casino Brantford has a rake of 12.5%.

Be careful what you wish for: ;)

    - $240 Events #1 & 4: 19.2% rake, :( SL=6, PF=42, Utility Factor = 209, highest possible Rank of 6. Rank 6 tournaments usually have a buy-in of at least $10,000, but these $240 events have almost as much play as the WSOP Main Event, which has a Utility Factor of 296.7!

    - $240 "Turbo" Events #3 & 8: 19.2% rake, SL=6, PF=19.3, Utility Factor = 129, Rank = 5.
    - $350 Events #2 & 5: 16.9% rake, SL=6, PF=42, Utility Factor = 209, Rank = 6.
    - $560 Event #6: 13.4% rake, SL=6, PF=42, Utility Factor = 209, Rank = 6.
    - $1070 Event #7: 9.3% rake, SL=6, PF=59, Utility Factor = 488! Rank = 6. This has even more play than the $10,300 WPT NAPC, which had a Utility Factor of 445.

    - $85 SNG: 18.8% rake, SL=1, PF=2.0.
    - $235 single-table SNG: 8.9% rake, SL=1, PF=2.0.
    - $235 multi-table multi-qualifier satellite: 8.9% rake, SL=2, PF=3.6 (not 13.7).
multitable qualifier Patience 13.7 Skill 7 Rake 9%
Rake for $200. events is 16.7%
Rake for $300. events is 14.3%
Rake for $500. event is 10.7%
Rake for $1000. event is 6.7%
Unlike Seneca Casino which is improperly charging taxes for non-taxable satellites and cash tournament winnings below $5,000, :rage:, I believe that Turning Stone (and all other US casinos that I know) will only do the 30% withholding if your net poker winnings is over $5,000.

Conclusion: A rake of almost 20% (+ 30% withholding) is difficult to beat, but if you ever dreamt of playing in a $10,000+ Rank 6 event, you will probably never get anything cheaper in Canada than Turning Stone's $200+$40 events. Is anybody interested in participating in a rake-free satellite for these incredible Rank 6 tournaments?

Thats the "enhanced" calculation, only available to seniors.... Takes years to master...

And aren't you going to explain poker tournament "utility factor".. Some may not know of the books you ghost wrote for Arnold Snyder.... :)
  • utility factor explained would be helpful. So which tournaments do you like Blondefish? Will you be making the trip? If I wasn't in Calgary the previous weekend, I would probably make the drive. The satellites look pretty decent compared to the WPT Niagara.

Guilty as charged here, that 13.7 was a typo.... Still pretty darn good for a multi satellite..

I stand by the rest of my comments...

So has anyone else read Arnold Snyders Poker Tournament Formula 2 for math geeks? Actually it's a really good book even for those that don't have a math background... It provokes some real deep thought processes..

Without you having to read the book, here is a pretty good description... Hope I'm not stealing Blondefish's thunder here.... :)
Keep in mind that I don't think that Arnold Synder is the be all and end all either, just one more weapon, albeit a pretty heavy duty one, in your arsenal.

  • Ok...I might be able to get away with heading down for the first couple of tournaments. Will confirm once the date get closer and I see how much cramming I'll need to do.
  • Who is going to this?

I would be interested in going also. Please PM me

    Thanks.
  • Gonna see if I can get a few guys together for this. The last few tournaments look good.
  • Depending what happens to me in Vegas, I would be very interested in car pooling there as well......
  • Ditto. Assuming I'm allowed to leave the house after Las Vegas, :-[ one option for me is to carpool and share a room there from November 28 to December 1 and since there is a two-day gap on December 2-3, stay longer only if I win a seat to the main event on December 6-7.

So I take it nobody is interested in a rake-free EV-maximizing satellite with a decent structure and would rather pay up to 19% rake at the casino satellites? ???

I think the forum has come to the realization that playing a satellite against you is -EV.

    /g2
  • Paying 19% rake at Turning Stone to play satellites against me and the army of 2+2ers who are much better than me is much more -EV! :-\

  • I will check my schedule and if everything is clear I am interested in heading over as well...
  • Is anybody heading over there? I'm looking to carpool and split a room with someone.
  • I am booked for Fri/Sat night.....I already have 3 guys coming with me...so the room is tight....sorry :(

For those wondering the poker room rate is 90US a night at Turning Stone and you have to play 4 hours of poker or be registered in the tourney.

I will be playing the Saturday 350.00
  • has anyone played any turning stone tournaments.

just wondering if it is better to pre register or just register down there?

you can register the day of. Tons of room in these. Registration starts 1-2 hours before the game. Line moves very fast.

    gl
  • i know you can pre-reg with a credit card. not sure about in-person? also, the pre-reg gets you the poker room rate no hassle, assuming you don't have anywhere to stay in the middle of nowhere.
  • to register in person you go to the box office, which is in the right hallway of the casino if you're coming from the lobby, I think

edit wow i don't think that was what you were asking at all

edit2 also there was late registration when i went to the empire state thing in august
  • Thinking of going Friday evening and coming back Sunday. Anyone still on the fence and want to share travel and accommodation expenses?
  • pokerJAH wrote: »

No, with the 30% withholding tax and up to 19% rake, I have realized that it is -EV to travel to the US just to play in these tournaments. The $300 Casino Brantford tournament this Thursday and the GBH monthly tournaments starting in January are much better choices for Canadians since they are tax-free, the rake is 9% or less, and you save on the hotel and travel expenses. If somebody dragged me to Turning Stone, the only +EV option are the $235 single & multi-table satellites, since the rake is surprisingly lower than all the tournaments and satellites are not taxed the 30% withholding.

Good luck to those who are playing, and hopefully there will be more trip reports posted than this month.

I plan to play a few of these in 2009. Now that GBH has improved the structure (in my opinion) with the freezeout format, there will be some decent casino tournaments again in Ontario.
  • Ill there starting Fri night...till Sunday...

Anyone want to meet up while I am down there send me a PM.

Goodluck to everyone heading over the border!
  • Here's a mini review of the tournament for anyone interested...

So I ended up playing in Saturday's tournament and the turnout for both Friday's and Saturday's turnout were pretty good (I believe 400+ and 200+ players respectively). Both tournies had to finish the next day.

The structure was really good as stated on the first page. I even heard some players complaining that it was way too slow! Even though I dropped below chip average several times I never really felt pressured to push as there was more than enough time to wait for a good hand.

The resort itself I thought was really nice and I ended up staying there one night (which was much better than the motel I stayed at but much more expensive) since we had to finish play the next day. I played 1-2 NL for a few hours before the tourney resumed and looking back it would've probably been as profitable playing the cash games than playing the tourney (half the players on the table were definitely the 'touristy' type).

Anyways, being the short stack, I get knocked out within an hour of play (but not before 3 others so I managed to jump up a few spots) and to my semi-surprise they did not tax me at all and gave me my full winnings in chips. I had the impression that they started taxing players but I guess it's after a certain amount?

Although the drive back was long with the bad weather, all in all, I'd probably go again especially if I had someone to split expenses with if they have similar structured tournaments in the future.
  • Congrats. IF you won over U$5,000 net and you are saying that Turning Stone no longer withholds 30% tax from Canadians, then please confirm as I should go to the only tax-free US casino that I have heard of.

I wish I could say I won that much but I only won a little over $800.
  • I went down for the weekend, played 1-2 on the saturday and the 200+30+10 Turbo Deepstack. There was about 130 entries which was a little dissapointing. Started with 20k in chips and 20 minute blinds, pretty solid structure. My starting table was pretty weak and I got the impression a good portion of the field was as well. Ended up going card dead after about 3-4 hours of decent play and grinded for almost another 2. Got knocked out in 22nd, top 15 paid, not very much though, 1st was just under a 8K. They have another series in the middle of January. I would recommend it, very well organized from what I saw.
