I've always been under the impression that it goes in reverse alphabetical order... that seems to be the case just about everywhere I go. If all 4 aces are dealt in a race, the ace of spades wins. So, it goes spades, hearts, diamonds, clubs, IMO.
For absolute clarity, the best card is the Ace of Spades, 2nd best is the Ace of Hearts (not the Ks... ranks come first in priority), down to the 2 of clubs being the worst possible single card.
In case this thread gives you any crazy ideas about your poker home games, suits are never used to break ties when determining the winning hand in poker games. One exception (sort of) is that suits *are* used to determine the bring-in hand in stud-type games.
Actually, never say never. I just read that it is quite popular in the UK for poker games to include suit values for deciding the best poker hands. The funny thing was there were two different ways in which they ranked the suits.
Well, while I'm glad we said essentially the same thing, I'm still confused, and I'm not leaving until this gets straightened out!
Scotty said: "Alphabetical order from low to high". Isn't regular alphabetical order considered low to high??? ie: abcdefg. A=low. B=higher. C=higher still. Reverse alphabetical order would be from 'high to low', would it not?
For some reason - I have always ordered the suits Spades, Hearts, Clubs, Diamonds. I have been playing this way for ever, and this is big in many of the games we play like Guts.
Was I wrong the whole time about Diamonds being the lowest? Any source on this?

Yes, you were wrong the whole time about diamonds being the lowest. As for a reliable source, it's one of those things that I've heard and seen done so many times, I know it to be true. I did however do a quick search on RGP and came across a couple of threads confirming the SHDC ranking.... RGP isn't considered a 'reliable' source, but it is at least consistent with what I've experienced.
I'm sure there are more legitimate sources on the web to confirm this, though.

Alphabetical order = Clubs, Diamonds, Hearts, Spades
Therefore,
Low to high suits = Clubs, Diamonds, Hearts, Spades
That is, Clubs are low and Spades are high.
It would probably be more reliable to just remember it your own way...

King of Hearts: Charlemange
King of Diamonds: Caeser
King of Clubs: Alexander the Great
King of Spades: King David
So if you are ever holding the 2 black Kings you can call them Alex and Dave.
