Charity tournament

Ok..we are putting together a charity tourney..and I know some of you have this kind of experience...what I am looking for is a blind structure and time frame..

I am looking at 30-40 players, and a 4-5 hour time frame. Can anyone help out here?

  • Ok...this is what I have figured (edited from another post here)

    18:30 50 25
    19:00 100 50
    19:30 200 100
    20:00 400 200
    21:30 800 400
    22:00 1000 500
    22:30 1500 750
    23:00 2000 1000
    23:30 3000 1500
    24:00 5000 2500
    24:30 7000 3500

What kind of starting chip count should we run? Time frame is a factor here..as it will likely get started about 7:30..not 6:30..but we can try..lol

Skill level is novice to intermediate..,.maybe a couple of *decent* players...if that makes a difference
  • Are 20 minute blinds too short for live play and full tables? Players dealing, probably too much alcohol being consumed...ok..not "probably"..

    7:30 50 25
    7:50 100 50
    8:10 200 100
    8:30 400 200
    8:50 800 400
    9:10 1000 500

9:30 break 10 min for color ups

    9:40 1400 700
    10:00 2000 1000
    10:20 3000 1500
    10:40 5000 2500
    11:00 7000 3500

    4 chip sets/4 colors
    $25 -20 500
    $100 -11 1100
    $200 -7 1400
    $500 -0

At break time take all the 25's off the tables..make them 1000's (if needed). color up to the 500's

    Thoughts anyone??
  • A couple points. A small multi- table tourney will often be over by the time the BB is the same as the starting chip stack, give or take a blind level or so.
I think your blind structure needs a bit of tweaking, because the increases start out steep then slow down a bit oddly. For instance the jump between 200/400 and 400/800 is big, but the next jump to 500/1000 is small. You might put in a 300/600 level to smooth it out. If you add blind levels you can make them all only 20 minutes long to leave the tourney the same length.
Also you won't want to have T25 chips left in the game at level 7 - I would make that 1500/800 instead

I would recommend going with 5000 chips to start (100 bb stacks). If you are very concerned about going too long, you could make that 3000.
  • lol..thanks Mike..yeah, it looks like I was thinking somewhere down the same lines as you..what do you think of the tweaked version with a 300/600 in?

    7:30 50 25
    7:50 100 50
    8:10 200 100
    8:30 400 200
    8:50 600 300
    9:10 800 400
    9:30 break 10 min
    9:40 1000 500
    10:00 1400 700
    10:20 2000 1000
    10:40 3000 1500
    11:00 5000 2500
    11:20 7000 3500

Good to know...this whole thing just kind of got thrown at me today for Saturday night..the local Rotary is doing their annual casino night.. I won this tourney last year (750 buck travel voucher) and had phoned to ask about starting times this year..then they said they didn't know what they were doing and asked if I could help..

  • 4 chip sets/4 colors

I think for a 4 hour tourney you should have at least 2 breaks. Make your first one after the 100/200 level (thats 1 or 1.5 hrs depending blind length) and color up the T25 then.
I for one don't much like taking the 25s and making them 1000's later. If people know you're going to do this I think it's too tempting to pocket one or two 25's for later use. Don't have a T200, use that color for T1000. T200 is (to me) redundant, two 100's do the same thing.

For starting breakdown, for T3000 I would use
    T25 - 8
    T100 - 13 or 18
    T500 - 3 or 2

T25's are really only used for blinds in the first couple levels, starting out with less makes chipstacks more manageable and colouring up much easier. The T100 is the real workhorse chip for a tournament like this.

Here is the blind schedule I use for my charity tournaments. I start with T5000 in chips (8/13/3/2 breakdown) and 20 minute blinds. Start time is 7pm and it's done by midnight with about 25-30 players.

  • Sold!!

The T200 thought makes perfect sense, as does the 25-1000 change.

    T25 - 8
    T100 - 18
    T500 - 2

    Thanks Mike!!
  • You're welcome! Good luck at the tourney!

Are you actually running the tourney, or just advising and playing? I find it too difficult to play and run a tourney unless it's only three tables or less. I mean, it's doable, but I'm basically just giving away my buyin if it's any bigger.
  • I am only advising pre-tourney...then playing. They have a guy who will be directing..I wish they had the man power for dealers as well..but, so be it. If I get knocked out early, I will likely take over dealing one of the tables..providing we can get dealers for all of them as I think that would speed up play at the one table too much?
