Rake-free satellite for $10,300 WPT seat

While organizing the low buy-in rake-free satelllites, I was requested to have a higher buy-in so the winner will directly get the $10,300 WPT NAPC main event seat. For example, there have been at least five rake-free satellites run by Dead Money, The_Game and me where the winner got ~$1,240. Instead of driving to the casino and paying $860 in fees for the Step Q satellite, that $860 can be put back to the prize pool to increase your EV.

The satellite will be limited to the first 10-11 players who register. Four players are already confirmed and I will contact the other interested players soon. In case you or anybody we know is interested in participating, please PM me ASAP with your dates availability.

First Prize: $10,300 WPT NAPC Entry Voucher.
Buy-in: ~$1,240 (rake-free, 100% will go to prizes).
Starting Chips: 20,000, simulating the actual WPT structure as much as time permits so that the winner will have the best chance of winning money at the actual 5-day event. It will have the highest Skill Level of 6.
Date: Tentatively September 21, Sunday afternoon depending on when the registrants can make it.
Location: Mississauga or Georgetown home.

  • I would be interested but not on that day...my Birthday. I know of at least 2 others that would also.
  • Serious question, how good are forumers? I've never played at a home game run by a forumer, so I have no idea. Compare the level of play to a regular 5/5 NL table at Fallsview. I (perhaps mistakenly) assume most of the forumers playing are good, in which case I'd rather pay the rake to play at FV for easier competition.
  • Here are the some of the players that I have been up against in the $1,240 satellites at the casino:

    - third place winner of last year's NAPC
    - female player who made it to the final twenty of last year's WPT NAPC
    - player who wins against the poker superstars at the highest stakes cash games, and also won multiple satellite seats at the WSOP, WPT Bellagio and last year's NAPC.
    - professionals playing at the highest limits at Fallsview.

As far as I know, none of the interested players for this rake-free game have that kind of winning track record. Like all the other rake-free satellites, most of the participants will probably be non-forumers. If you think that you have above average poker skills, then having 20,000 starting chips instead of 3,000 chips with ~$860 added to the rake-free prize pool is such a no-brainer +EV choice, but that's just me! :fish:

Anyway, if HP_John, Dead Money and his two friends are in, then we may already have close to the 10 players required. I will make some phone calls to finalize the players, along with date and location.

  • Don't get me wrong but I am not sure one or both of these guys want to play a 7 hour sit and go. I will ask them this Thursday.
  • Is the payout voucher or cash $10,300.

According to OP, its a voucher.
  • So far three forum members have expressed interest, while the majority are non-forumers. To further increase the EV of this rake-free satellite, I will NOT be playing and will just volunteer as the tournament director and dealer. Three players at Fallsview have won multiple $10,300 WPT seats and have been dominating the Step Q satellites with one of them usually making it to the top two, so it is likely that you will get seated against one or more of these "satellite kings" there. Below is an equity comparison of playing in a rake-free satellite versus playing at the casino satellite with $860 fees.

    Rake-Free Satellite Equities
    1-5) Forumers 1-5: $1,300 each
    6-10) Non-forumers: $1,180 each.
    Total buy-ins/equities = $12,400.
Since it is a zero-sum game with no rake, playing is +EV for five of the players.

    Casino Satellite Equities
    0) Administration fees: $860
    1) Satellite King 1: $1,500
    2) Satellite King 2: $1,500
    3) BlondeFish: $1,500
4-9) Players that could have participated in the rake-free satellite: only $1,015 average equity each
    10) Casino donkey: $950.
    Total buy-ins = $12,400.
Since it is a negative-sum game with $860 taken out of the players' buy-ins and there are several sharks who play every single $1,240 satellite and have won multiple times, then it becomes highly -EV compared to the rake-free satellite.

My friends who dream of playing in the $10,300 event have asked me for advice, so here it is:
    1) Organize or participate in as many rake-free satellites as you can, such as Dead Money's Thursday satellites. Use the ~$1,240 you win to play in the rake-free satellite for the $10,300 seat.
    2) If you can't find a rake-free satellite, carpool to Fallsview to play the $460 satellite to win a $1,240 voucher. Sell one voucher by the next $1,240 satellite, and use the proceeds to play in the rake-free satellite for the $10,300 seat.

If you or anybody you know is interested in maximizing EV for a $10,300 WPT seat, please contact me ASAP. I will register for every single $1,240 satellite at Fallsview, so say hi if you see me.

What has been the trend with their domination? I did not really see any players that had an +ev edge on me? When you think about it, for the most part they know as much about me as I know about them.

If you have any tips that would be great as I am preparing to do battle again this weekend. However if I do with a couple of 1240 vouchers I may just jump over to this game as well.

The no-brainer equity-maximizing tip is to sell one of your $1,240 vouchers and play in the rake-free satellite. Only if you have extra $1,240 vouchers, then you can sacrifice equity by playing in a raked satellite against one or more satellite kings. In the last $1,240 sat. I played, all seven of the players I recognized were good so I knew that I was in a -EV situation where possibly none of the similarly skilled ten players could beat the $860 rake.

    Seat 3 - Me
Seat 4 - Chip leader in the final two of a previous $1,240 sat. who accepted a deal.
Seat 5 - Won a $10,300 seat early on and disappeared, but may now be back to play a lot more $1240 sats.
Seat 7 - Winner of numerous satellites at the WSOP, WPT Bellagio, and already has a couple of $10,300 vouchers. I would avoid playing against this millionaire pro, but this has been impossible since he plays every $1240 satellite when he comes to Fallsview to play the highest limit cash game.
Seat 8 - Has over $300K in tournament winnings, but is one of several former forumers who were flamed from ever wanting to contribute to this forum again. :(
Seat 9 - One of the top local players in the Canadian Poker Tour.
Seat 10 - Fallsview young professional who has started playing every single satellite and made it to the final two in $1240 sat. earlier that day.

Almost two hours into the satellite, there were still seven of us left. Two of the faces I didn't recognize outlasted most of the seven sharks. There were four players left when I had to go home at 5 AM since the championship game of a rake-free WPT $11K league I play in was later that day.

If you definitely want to play at the main event, then another tip is to bring enough cash to make a possible deal. In a couple of the $1240 sats. that I played, my heads-up opponents really wanted to play the event so I offered to take extra cash while they get the $10,300 voucher. They didn't have enough cash with them, so we were forced to play it out and they missed out on the $10,300 vouchers and just got a replay. In another $1,240 sat., I had over 80% of the chips when it got down to three players, so I offered the two micro stacks cash.
  • Thanks for the info, I will keep that in mind.
  • don't we all walk around with a five figure bankroll in our hip pocket?

:D Whenever I saw a forumer before, I would ask, "Is that your session bankroll in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?" ;)

Seriously, several forumers now have what's called a "front money account" with the casino, where you can conveniently keep cash instead of having to carry enough $20 bills to stop a bullet or being restricted by your bank's daily withdrawal limit.
