help please with rule interpretation at a home game
a recent situation has become sour grapes at our home game
player1 on button[3 handed] moves all in for his remainding2500[a5 off]
player2, chip leader and sb pushes all in with aa 10000 chips
player3 bb..the shortest stack goes all in as well for his remainding1500[aq off]..our home game pays 1st and 2nd
i split the pot accordingly..main pot, consisting of blinds and antes from all 3 players and the difference from the shortest stack and the side pot which consisted of the difference between
the shortest stack player3 and Player1
the flop.10,3 8, turn2,river9,rainbow
player2wins main pot and side pot.. i awarded player1 with 2nd, because he started the hand with more chips than player3..player 3 argues that he had a better hand than player1 and should win 2nd prize...i said no..i believe i am right in this rule interpretation..can any one shed some light with an explaination on this situation ..thanks

Although player with AQ "beat" A5, AA beat them both... neither player gains any more chips, so their relative positions (1st 2nd, and 3rd place) remain the same.

Where is this home game, and when is the next one
Remind player3 that he has the option to fold and hope player1 gets eliminated. I assume the blinds were fairly high so sitting in player3 position with AQ, I call if I have more chips than player1 and fold if I have less.
