To extract the most money...

I've already made my choice, but I was wondering.. "What would you do in this case?"

Very early stages of a tournament (ie. no real read on anyone yet), each player still had ~$10,000
Blinds (25/50)

Players in the hand:
Me (CO)
Player A (MP)
Player B (BB)

I'm dealt T9o

Pre-flop:
Folds to A who calls. I call, BB checks.

FLOP: 4d 7h 8d (dbl-ended straight draw) (Pot $175)

Player B checks
Player A bets $200
I call.

TURN: Ah (Pot $575)

Player A checks
I bet $700 on a semi-bluff ;)
Player A calls.

RIVER: Js (Pot $1975) - Yay! Absolute nuts!

Player A checks.

What does Player A have? What do you do bet to extract the most amount of money from them? Should the turn have been played differently?

  • I would put in an oversized bet here, make it like I was trying to buy the pot about 1 + 1/2 the pot size. You bet the Ace. It would be hard for him to put you on the straight in this case.

If he has something he is probably going to call you, if he has nothing no matter what you bet he is probably going to fold.

He might have an Ace with a large kicker or 2 pair. I think you could bet large and get paided off you might even get a reraise in an attempt to resteal the pot.

EDIT: Then again you proably shouldn't do this, as I am the worst player in NL for getting value out of my hands. I make a good player here and there but I still need a lot of work. LOL
  • I say he has 56os, and was waiting to see the river The heart on the urn was gonna be a check raise allin then he thought betterr of it till the end. You bet river he pushed, and lossed.

Stab in the dark mind you.
  • If it's a low buy-in tournament, I'd simply push all-in and hope I'm up against a Gomer.
Should the turn have been played differently?

You'd have serious difficulties trying to convince me that checking is the wrong play here. :)

  • i just under bet the pot ... something like $1200.

It's a bet that he is almost guaranteed to call with any pair and if you luck out and he hit a set at some point, you'll get the desired check raise by him. Which you can push all-in with.

The real problem is that your $700 bet with the ace may well have scared him or helped him, that's hard to tell so far.

I bet $1200 because i'm guaranteed the call, and if he has hit something like a set, two pair or the baby straight he may check raise you here.

This gives you the best value i think.
  • I agree with Scotty -- I would have checked the turn.

On the end I'd bet half the pot. That is a maddening size of a bet,
since it could mean lots of things... does it want to be called?...
is it an inexpensive bluff? Unless he's hit two pair at least its
unlikely he'll call much more than that. Maybe 2/3 pot if you think
    you'll get paid.
  • I put the player on a Diamond draw and decided that the turn either really helped or did nothing. (Ie. I coud see the place with A-rag of hearts.)

So, I bet $2525 at the pot, hoping that it would come across as a steal (when, in hindsite, it probably looked like I was betting my Ace.

My thinking was that if they had a dead draw, after my turn bet I probably could n't get them to call anything. If anything I think I underbet what I was trying to do. I wanted to make a bet that looked like a steal attempt to try and get at least a call.

I bet, he folded, and I'll never know. :(

After much thinking, I believe betting half the pot would have been a better move. (Because, if he had a monster, he'd probably come over the top of me anyway)
  • On the flop, I would put Player A on a flush draw. I think he was folding the river unless you made a small bet of around half the pot.
  • I think he was on a flush draw!! He bet after the flop with the 2 :diamond: showing. He checks on the river after the A. He may have had an A with a small kicker and just called after the bet you should have checked. :)
If he already had 2 pair then he should have re-raised you after your bet that you should have checked. :) Same thing with a set.

I think he was on the flush draw and EEEEEHAW for the river !!!

    Nice rake Zithal :)
